👍 What is Worth Choosing Prairie Clover Campground?
Prairie Clover Campground, as an area within Clinton State Park, offers Kansas locals a highly valuable mix of convenience and recreation that is hard to match.
What makes this location worth choosing is its sheer volume and diversity of recreational offerings. For the active outdoor enthusiast, the extensive and challenging trail system for hiking and mountain biking, coupled with the archery and disc golf facilities, provides days of structured activity right at your doorstep. For those who prioritize water activities, the clear waters of Clinton Lake and the accessible swim beach, boat ramps, and nearby full-service marina make it an ideal spot for boating, fishing, and watersports.
Furthermore, the campground's ability to cater to multiple camping styles—from the pull-through RV sites with utilities that are noted in customer feedback for being "very nice and well maintained," to the rustic primitive areas—ensures that almost any camper can find a suitable spot. The ability to reserve sites is a significant benefit, especially for planning weekend trips.
However, it is important to note the recurring themes in local user feedback, which indicate that the quality of maintenance, particularly in the primitive sites and shower/restroom facilities, can be inconsistent. Issues such as missing fire rings, unkempt sites, and problems with shower house functionality (clogged drains, lack of hot water) have been reported by past campers. Potential visitors should keep in mind that while the overall park amenities are excellent (trails, lake access, utility sites), the conditions of specific facilities like restrooms and primitive sites may vary. It is highly advisable for campers, especially those reserving primitive sites, to check with the park office for the most recent facility status and to come prepared for a variable camping experience in terms of site cleanliness and public facility upkeep.
Despite potential maintenance shortcomings in some areas, the access to outstanding amenities like the archery range, disc golf, and the lake remains the primary draw, making Prairie Clover a popular and valuable outdoor resource for the Lawrence and greater Kansas community. The natural scenery—prairie grasses and woodlands—and the abundance of native wildlife also contribute to the park's appeal as a genuine Kansas outdoor experience.

The site we reserved ended up having no fire ring and was strewn with trash. All the primitive sites in that corner of the campground were tiny with barely any useable space for a tent and were covered in various trash. That being said, the electric sites designed for trailers looked very nice and well maintained, the cabin area was definitely well maintained. The shower house was dangerously hot inside with no ventilation and the drains were clogged. We did enjoy other things such as the archery and disc golf courses and the swim beach
I have camped here many many times over 30 years... This 10-day stay at the end of September 2025 was by far the worst. The bathroom showers were inoperable shower heads missing and no hot water. Talking to the park manager only got me an earful on how they didn't have enough money from the state or not enough employees with no solution to the fact that we didn't have things that we needed. The campground was not mowed and the fire pit did not have old ashes removed in the entire time we were there. Very disappointed.
Beautiful scenery lots of space and the camp hosts are friendly. The showers however are either too hot or too cold. The showers with motion sensors don't stay on long enough.
Really like this campground. A couple reasons on why i didnt give it a 5 star review. 1st one is that at some of the full hookup sites the grass is extremely to long near the camp sites and causes the bugs to be extremely bad worse than normal. The long grass is actually touching the bottom of my camper. 2nd is there is no easy access to the lake for swimming that i know of.
There's a few family members who love camping out here. They bugged me to come over to check Clinton campgrounds. So far I am very impressed. Clean campgrounds, tons of wide open space. Friendly people, camps grounds have good roads and tons of room. For the kids: the roads are good enough to bike and rollerblade on. There's an archery zone, many walking and bike trails. Fishing 🎣 places, boating and swimming areas. All in all I would definitely come back here. The bathrooms were spotless. Great working staff! Great camping grounds! Highly recommend for family's and just about anyone who wants to spend some time in nature with clean homey touches. ~Cecilia
