Prairie Ridge Park/Lake Rathbun is conveniently located in Moravia, IA 52571, USA. Moravia is a small community in Appanoose County, nestled in the scenic south-central region of Iowa. This location places the campground directly on the shores of Lake Rathbun, one of Iowa's largest and most popular lakes, often managed by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (COE).
The accessibility of Prairie Ridge Park is a significant advantage for many Iowa residents. For those traveling from Des Moines, it's approximately a 1.5 to 2-hour drive, offering a manageable distance for a weekend getaway. From Cedar Rapids, the drive is typically around 2.5 to 3 hours. The journey to Moravia and Lake Rathbun generally involves well-maintained state and county roads, ensuring a relatively smooth trip for vehicles of all sizes, including RVs and trailers. The campground's direct proximity to Lake Rathbun means that water-based activities are immediately accessible, without the need for extensive travel once you've set up camp. While the reviews highlight the quiet nature of the campground, its location near a popular recreational lake ensures that it's a known destination, making navigation straightforward. Prairie Ridge Park/Lake Rathbun primarily offers services that cater to traditional camping, focusing on site provisions and lake access. Reviews indicate a mix regarding the condition and consistency of some facilities.
-
Campsites: The campground provides sites suitable for various camping setups. While specific hookup details (e.g., electric, water, sewer) are not explicitly detailed in the provided reviews, the mention of "electric" being the "only electric" implies electric hookups are available on at least some sites. The negative comment about "water smelled like sewage straight out of the spicket" suggests water access at sites, but with potential quality issues. Campers should be prepared with their own water.
-
Bathrooms/Shower House: The campground includes a "Shower house" and "vault toilets." However, reviews indicate issues with cleanliness: "Shower house was filthy even though the attendant and volunteer live right there by it," and "vault toilets could be pumped more often. And just a little wipe down." This suggests that while these facilities exist, their maintenance can be inconsistent.
-
Attendant/Volunteer Presence: The presence of an "attendant and volunteer live right there by it" implies on-site staff, which can be beneficial for guest assistance and inquiries, even if their direct oversight of cleanliness might vary.
-
Lake Access: The primary service is direct access to Lake Rathbun, allowing campers to enjoy activities like boating, fishing, and taking in "the view of the lake."
-
Picnic Tables and Fire Rings: As is standard for most campgrounds, it is highly probable that individual campsites are equipped with picnic tables and fire rings for outdoor dining and campfires, although these were not specifically mentioned in the provided reviews.
Given the review about water quality, campers are strongly advised to "definitely don't show up without water" or be prepared to treat water from the spigots.
Despite some reported challenges with facilities, Prairie Ridge Park/Lake Rathbun offers several compelling features and highlights that attract campers, particularly those seeking a specific type of outdoor experience in Iowa.
-
Beautiful Lake Views: A consistent highlight is "the view of the lake." Camping right on Lake Rathbun provides picturesque scenery, especially with the "cool breeze" coming off the water. This natural beauty is a significant draw for relaxation and photography.
-
Quiet Atmosphere: The campground is explicitly described as "quite and that's a plus." For campers seeking a peaceful escape from noise and crowds, this tranquil environment is a major advantage, allowing for deep relaxation and connection with nature.
-
Direct Access to Lake Rathbun: Being located directly on Lake Rathbun offers immediate access to one of Iowa's largest recreational lakes. This is ideal for activities like boating, fishing, and simply enjoying the vastness of the water. Lake Rathbun is known for various fish species, including crappie, walleye, bass, and catfish, offering great fishing opportunities (though individual luck may vary).
-
Well-Maintained Overall Campground: One review states, "the whole campground is in really good shape." This suggests that despite issues with specific facilities like the shower house, the general grounds, campsites, and common areas are well-kept, contributing to a pleasant camping environment.
-
Refreshing Breeze: The mention of a "cool breeze" off the lake is a welcome feature, especially during warmer months, providing natural comfort and enhancing the enjoyment of the lakeside setting.
-
Busy but Maintained Beach: The beach, while "busy," is "well maintained for all the people." This indicates a popular spot that is still cared for, providing a lively yet functional area for swimming and relaxation.

Nice and clean love the view of the lake with cool breeze..
Shower house was filthy even though the attendant and volunteer live right there by it.. vault toilets could be pumped more often . And just a little wipe down.. water smelled like sewage straight out of the spicket. Definitely don't show up with out water.. but it's quite and that's a plus.
This campground sits on a hill overlooking Lake Rathbun which gives campers an amazing view of the lake while they stay. There are water/electric hook-ups for RV/Camper Trailers. Tent camping is also available. A playground for the little ones. Plenty of hiking trails and easy access down to the lake. Shower house is a drive from camping area and bathrooms on site could be improved. All in all had a great time and will continue to be a favorite of mine.
Great campground ! Would go back again
