Priest River Recreation Area Introduce
For Idaho residents seeking a convenient and well-equipped spot to enjoy the beautiful North Idaho outdoors, the Priest River Recreation Area Campground offers a compelling option. Situated right on the banks of the picturesque Priest River, just upstream from its confluence with the larger Pend Oreille River, this campground provides a refreshing blend of natural beauty and thoughtful amenities. While it's noted for being a bustling spot due to its proximity to a major highway, its clean facilities, spacious sites, and direct access to water recreation make it a popular choice for many Idahoans.
Operated by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE), the Priest River Recreation Area is known for its well-maintained grounds and dedicated park hosts. It’s a place where you can easily launch a boat, cast a line, or simply relax by the river, even if for just a single night’s layover. Its commitment to providing essential comforts like free showers and hot water for dishwashing sets it apart, offering a more comfortable camping experience than some more primitive sites in the region. For locals looking for a functional and convenient base for their North Idaho adventures, this campground offers a lot to appreciate.
The Priest River Recreation Area Campground is located at 7120 US-2, Priest River, ID 83856, USA. This address places it directly on U.S. Highway 2, just east of the town of Priest River in the scenic panhandle of North Idaho. Its position along a major highway ensures excellent accessibility for campers traveling from various parts of Idaho and beyond.
From Coeur d'Alene, a significant hub in North Idaho, the drive to the campground is straightforward and typically takes about 45 minutes to an hour, heading east on US-2. For those coming from Boise, the state capital, the journey is considerably longer, usually around 6 to 7 hours, traversing the state's diverse landscapes. However, for residents in the northern half of Idaho, especially those in the Spokane-Coeur d'Alene metropolitan area, it's a very convenient drive for a weekend getaway or a short stopover.
The campground's direct access from US-2 means easy navigation for RVs and trailers. While the proximity to the highway contributes to some traffic noise, as noted by previous visitors, it also means that essential services in the town of Priest River are just a half-mile away. Customer Reviews
The general experience we had was positive. We stayed for one night only, but if we would have stayed for longer we wouldn't be so happy Pros: - Clean bathrooms with free of additional charge showers - Large sinks with hot water for dish washing - Easy access to water Cons: - Loud! Very loud due to the car traffic - Lawn mowing at 7am!
Great place to spend the day camping could have been nicer and had it been a little quieter. Our campsite was next to the major highway and was very loud. the spaces were very large and they have showers and water available. Firewood is also available for reasonable prices if you forgot yours.
Clean, well organized, helpful folks. I Moto camp and enjoy a shower every day so these were nice :-) Close to restaurants in town. Great beach and water access. Lots of families which was good for me. But if you're Scrooge McDuck stay somewhere else.
Great place to stay. The camp hosts were amazing and very friendly! Campsites were clean. They provide bathrooms and showers! Lake was very nice too. Will definitely come back.
We love the Mudhole and have camped here quite a few times. Rangers and attendants are friendly, campsites are well taken care of, bathrooms and showers are clean (which we were pleasantly surprised to find out are free now), the river and beach area are beautiful and the whole area (for the most part) is kid friendly. The only reason I give it four stars was because my daughter was playing with a five year old who was stung several times at the play area. Turns out, there were several hornet nests under the play area toys (underneath the ramp kids go up and down). Just keep an eye on that if you have kids.
