Come for the sand but stay for the stars. The sand and dunes are truly amazing, but if you have opportunity to camp out under the stars DO IT. It was truly one of the most breathtaking and astonishing sights I’ve witnessed. The clarity of the celestial sky was, out of this world. I’ve never seen so many stars with my naked eye. An experience you’ll never forget. (There is a bit of a trek up and down dunes to get to the campsites. It can get pretty hot so make sure you take plenty of water and food. Also get to the visitors center at least an hour before opening to secure a site. There are only 10 and it’s first come first serve) PS this photo is from a GoPro hero5. It’s impressive but doesn’t do the view justice.

It's been closed since covid. First because of covid, now they have to rehabilitate the sites. What a convenient way to completely close off a unique natural experience. The dunes under a *moonless* night is unique and not reproduced by a full moon night.

Awesome must-do camping experience. Be prepared to hike in at least 1 mile from where you park. It’s obviously going to be hot so bring lots of water and your own shading. The night sky is absolutely breathtaking and there’s nothing like waking up on sand dunes! You can get your pass at the visitors center of the white sands monument.

Camping out among the sand dunes is a magical experience. It gets cold at night, especially during the winter, so come prepared with some warm clothing. Everything is going to get sandy, so I recommend bringing gear you don't mind getting dirty. There is no escaping the sand.

We could not stay here during our visit, but we hiked the trail and I wanted to add some photos of the various designated campsites for this campground. The only way I could see to do that is to write this review and upload my photos. I did have a hard time identifying every one of the campsites, thus not every one is documented in the photos. I hope this helps anyone who gets a chance to stay here in the future.

Almost 1 year later update: NPS Ranger from the park provided no expected reopening. From conversation I would not expect this to be open for years, if ever again.
