Beautiful spot. Good tent pad, fire pit and BBQ (BYO charcoal). Probably not a lot of maintenance going on during the week... We had to cleanup the site a bit (beer bottles and cans). Bathrooms were clean. Mid week it was quiet as far as neighbors go.... There will be noise from the road, especially as cars go over a cattle grate. But very few cars went down the road after about 9pm. It was pretty cool to hear elk bugling during the night. One thing... We didn't see any aspens there!
Great spot near I40. Some of the cleanest pit toilets I’ve ever experienced. Lots of sites all FCFS. Temps dipped pretty low in October due to elevation. Bring firewood, little scavenging due to proper forest management. Large tent pads, adjustable fire pit, grill, and concrete picnic table. Slightly disappointed we didn’t see any aspens.
Clean, almost groomed campground. 20 sites each with concrete picnic tables, gravel tent pads, level (or almost) driveway. No hook-ups but at $5 a night it was great! Lots of highway traffic but trees blocked the noise mostly. Sites spaced away from everyone else.
Beautiful site & with Access Pass, camping was only $2.50 a night! "Quaking Aspen campground offers a respite from the heat in a setting of aspen and mature ponderosa pine trees. Approximately 6 miles south of Fort Wingate, this is the most recently renovated campground on the Mt. Taylor Ranger District. The area has a rich history of railroad logging and the original town of McGaffey was built in the vicinity of McGaffey Lake a few miles down the road." We visited McGaffey Lake but it was dried up & not much of a lake anymore.
Nice clean campground right off of the road. At 7,600 feet all sites are FCFS, no reservations. The cost is $5 per site per day use or overnight before applying an interagency pass discount. They have posted an increase request to $10 per site and with the great condition it’s in, they will likely get it. Even without the water. There are 20 sites including one site for a group. It looks like they have recently updated this campground with concrete molded picnic tables, updated fire rings, grill and tent pads all in new raised level and pea gravel areas. With the kind of investment made, the only thing missing are the bear boxes... and the water. The Ranger advised the update was over 12 years ago and it is still in great shape. I have been to campgrounds with a host that are in worse shape than here, all on the honor system. There are miles of bicycle trails close and some of the outer sites have a trail access right next to or at your site. Great place. Highly recommend.
