My friends and I stayed here for two nights. We did not expect it to be very cold but had enough blankets, inflatable beds, and a sleeping bag to use. We loved that it looked like a private area due to the road leading towards the back of the mountain. It had a picnic table and grill. The restroom facility was well-kept, and there were three trash bins for us to use. Another road led further back, and we found a trail to hike. The trail was 1.5 miles. We took plenty of photos and videos. Towards the end of the trail, we saw cattle roaming around. Our trip was short, but nature always makes it worth it. WE RECOMMEND THIS PLACE.
One of several excellent campgrounds in this area, right beside Iron Creek
Nice, small campground beside Iron Creek. Tables, toilet, & fire ring. Trailhead for Gallinas Canyon and Railroad Canyon trails.
This is where the, "Lady with the cat," was found after 30 days in the middle of the winter. She was still alive. 3 search and rescue teams were sent on a body recovery mission once it was determined she was up there. If you just Google, lady with a cat found in the Gila Forest alive, it hit every major newspaper and the London daily mail.
Fun area to hike, and back backpack. Today the creek was really high due to snow melt, so it made for a wet trip but it was still pleasant. A little busier than I expected.
