Rattlesnake Mountain Introduce

Rattlesnake Mountain, located in Terlingua, TX 79852, offers a permit-only backcountry camping experience for those seeking solitude and immersion in the desert landscape. As part of the Campgrounds & RV Parks category, this site provides a remote and rugged camping environment.

The campground is situated a few miles down a dirt road from the Maverick Junction park entrance, offering a sense of seclusion and tranquility. Visitors can expect to experience solitude, with minimal disturbance from passing vehicles on the dirt road. The surrounding desert environment is characterized by beautiful landscapes, including abundant ocotillo plants.

One of the key features of Rattlesnake Mountain is its suitability for beginner off-roading. The dirt road leading to the campsite and the surrounding areas provide opportunities for off-road exploration. However, it's important to note that some areas may have deep sand, which can limit travel.

Campers should be prepared for desert conditions, including high temperatures and limited shade. The absence of shade can be a significant factor, especially during hot weather. It is essential to bring adequate water, sun protection, and appropriate camping gear.

For supplies, the Cottonwood General Store is located a 10-minute drive past the park entrance. While the store is well-stocked, it is known to be expensive. Campers should plan accordingly and bring as many supplies as possible.

Rattlesnake Mountain offers a unique backcountry camping experience for those seeking solitude and a connection with the desert environment. The permit-only access ensures a less crowded experience, and the surrounding terrain provides opportunities for off-roading and exploration.

Permit-only backcountry campsite a few miles down a dirt road from the Maverick Junction park entrance. I was able to camp in solitude without having to hear anyone else except for an occasional vehicle on the dirt road. Beautiful desert surroundings including lots of happy ocotillos. I only wished there was some sort of shade there because I was tent camping and it was 95 degrees. I tried driving south on the dirt road but turned around after a couple of miles due to deep sand. If you need any supplies the Cottonwood General Store is a 10 minute drive just past the park entrance and is surprisingly well stocked although very expensive.
