I've never gone backpacking before. This was definitely not entry level but I had an awesome trip. For days three different camps. The hills were a struggle for me being in my 50's with 50 pounds on my back but the trekking poles were a big help with balance and a few missed steps. I'm going back next summer. Some of the most beautiful views in Michigan!

Easy to get to with ample parking options. We used the parking lot as a pick up/drop off spot for kayak rental. We were able to park along the road with several others doing the same, with just a small walk to the river. The parking lot is shared as a boat launch and home to about 5 camping spots. Super easy to identify as your exit from the river. We drove to Woodpecker Creek access to drop in our kayaks and floated back in about 4 hours.

Beautiful natural area but very busy and noisy, especially on weekends. Despite facilitating other services, this is first and foremost a boat launch. Not a place to camp longer than you have to. Sites are adjacent to a parking lot that serves as a thoroughfare for hikers, and boaters.

My friend and I had both an excellent and challenging adventure as first timers when it comes to hiking in general. Making the Manistee River Loop our first of many hiking trips was well worth it. The only negative I could say was that some locations along the trail are poorly marked and we did get turned around on two occasions. The Manistee River Trail is excellent for family and camping enthusiasts with beautiful views and an abundance of water sources.
