Red Bud Campground Introduce

Introduction / Overview

For the Oklahoma adventurer who prizes true immersion in nature and desires a rustic, authentic camping experience, Red Bud Campground is a premier destination. Situated literally at the foot of the iconic Robbers Cave, within the breathtaking landscape of Robbers Cave State Park near Wilburton, this campground is specifically designed for primitive tent camping. It offers an experience focused on simplicity, nature, and immediate access to some of Oklahoma’s most spectacular outdoor landmarks.

Red Bud is one of the many camping areas within the vast State Park, but it stands apart by being designated for unimproved or primitive use, meaning campers must be largely self-sufficient. This setup is highly valued by seasoned Oklahoman campers seeking solitude away from the noise and infrastructure of large RV areas. Customer feedback confirms the desirability of the location, noting it as a "Great camping spot right at the foot of Robbers Cave." The emphasis here is on the natural surroundings—mature trees for shade and "lots of space and trees for hammocks"—making it a perfect base camp for hikers, climbers, and cave explorers. It offers a chance to disconnect completely and reconnect with the rugged, storied terrain of the San Bois Mountains.

Location and Accessibility

Red Bud Campground is nestled deep within Robbers Cave State Park, which is located approximately five miles north of Wilburton, Oklahoma, on State Highway 2. The park itself is a historical treasure, famous as a former hideout for outlaws like Jesse James and Belle Starr.

The location address is:

Robbers Cave Rd, Wilburton, OK 74578, USA

Access to Red Bud is typically via the internal park road system off Highway 2, leading directly to the base of the famous bluffs where the cave is situated. While the main park entrance is easily navigable, users should be prepared for typical State Park roads leading to the primitive areas. Its proximity to the main Robbers Cave landmark is a key feature, allowing campers to be the first on the trails in the morning. This location is within comfortable driving distance for Oklahomans from Tulsa and Oklahoma City, making it a favorite weekend getaway destination in the southeastern region of the state. Because Red Bud is designated as a primitive area, visitors should ensure their vehicle is suitable for unpaved sections of the road, particularly in adverse weather.

Services Offered

As a primitive camping area within the Oklahoma State Parks system, Red Bud Campground is defined by its minimal infrastructure, which contributes to its rustic appeal. Campers must come prepared for a traditional, self-contained experience.

Great camping spot right at the foot of Robbers Cave. The best sites are #1 or 2. Both have lots of space and trees for hammocks. #5 is a waterfront site but during any rain it can get muddy.
