Rio Bravo Ranch Introduce
Introduction / Overview
For Texas adventurers, the Big Bend region represents the pinnacle of high-desert exploration, a place where the landscape is as vast as the history. Nestled within this breathtaking corner of Far West Texas, Rio Bravo Ranch near Presidio is not a typical campground; it is a premier destination offering a dual experience: secluded, high-amenity campsites and a separate, architecturally stunning luxury adobe rental home called La Centinela. This family-owned ranch borders the legendary Rio Grande, providing guests with an unparalleled opportunity to immerse themselves in the raw, serene beauty of the Chihuahuan Desert.
Rio Bravo Ranch is perfectly situated for Texans looking for an authentic, yet comfortable, basecamp for exploring the two crown jewels of the region: Big Bend National Park and Big Bend Ranch State Park. The property is celebrated by guests for its incredible views, tranquil solitude, and a level of personalized service that elevates the stay from a simple overnight stop to a memorable retreat. As one reviewer aptly put it, the ranch “so perfectly represents its own little corner of the planet,” delivering on incredible design and “5 Star service” even in this remote setting. Whether you seek a rugged, isolated camping experience or the quiet luxury of a custom-designed home, Rio Bravo Ranch delivers an unforgettable piece of the Big Bend life.
Location and Accessibility
Rio Bravo Ranch is uniquely positioned in Presidio County, right on the famous FM 170, the “River Road,” which is consistently ranked as one of the most scenic drives in the entire United States. This location provides both exceptional views and convenient access to key regional parks.
Official Address: 17211 FM170, Presidio, TX 79845, USA
The ranch is minutes away from the entrance to Big Bend Ranch State Park and serves as an excellent western gateway to the greater Big Bend area. Its location along the Rio Grande offers guests unique, unobstructed views across the river and into Mexico, directly from the comfort of the property. For local Texans, the drive down FM 170 itself is part of the adventure.
While the ranch offers extreme isolation—a key feature—accessibility is generally good. The main accommodation, La Centinela, is easily reached. For the more remote campsites, while the county roads are generally maintained, some isolated sites may require high-clearance or 4x4 vehicles, especially after rain. Guests should be mindful that the nearest major town for comprehensive supplies is Presidio, about 15 minutes away, making the ample water supply provided at the accommodations a thoughtful and necessary touch.
Services Offered
Rio Bravo Ranch provides a tiered level of service that spans from secluded, well-equipped camping to full-service luxury lodging, making it highly versatile for Texas travelers.
- Luxury Home Rental (La Centinela): A beautifully designed adobe house with high-end, modern amenities, full kitchen access, covered patio space, and panoramic viewing arches.
 - Personalized Hospitality: Management, noted by reviewers as “Lauren,” is praised for exceptional organization and service. For La Centinela guests, a private cook service is a standout offering, with customer Iris delivering “wonderful new flavours from across the border.”
 - Isolated Campsites (Four total): Offering maximum privacy, these sites are spread out over hundreds of acres, ensuring no immediately adjacent neighbors. They are ideal for tent and smaller RV camping (under 18 feet).
 - Campsite Amenities: Each site includes improvements like a fire ring with a cooking grate, a shaded structure, and a picnic table. Shared amenities include a Big Kahuna SHOWER and a clean portapotty (Chinati Potty).
 - Water Supply: Potable water is plentiful at the house. Non-potable water for general camp use (showers, washing) is provided in common areas for campsite guests (Note: this water is not for drinking).
 - Adventure Extras: Jeep Rentals are available on-site, offering guests a convenient way to navigate the rugged, 4x4-only terrain of the Big Bend region.
 - Thoughtful Touches: Guests enjoy features like a covered patio (critical in the Texas sun), a firepit for s’mores and evening warmth, a quality JBL Extreme Speaker, and complimentary drinks like Topo Chico.

Features / Highlights
The unique features of Rio Bravo Ranch emphasize solitude, comfort, and direct connection to the Big Bend environment.
- International Dark Sky Views: The Far West Texas desert offers unparalleled night skies. The campsites, such as the ‘Star Party’ site, are explicitly positioned for optimal stargazing, allowing Texans to witness the Milky Way in dazzling clarity.
 - Rio Grande Border View: A truly special highlight is the ability to see Mexico and the Rio Grande from the comfort of the accommodations, including the couch at La Centinela, a reminder of the ranch’s incredible border location.
 - Proximity to Parks: The ranch is the perfect launchpad for hiking, mountain biking, and exploring the vast trails and canyons of Big Bend Ranch State Park.
 - Architectural Comfort: The La Centinela house is an architectural gem, designed with panoramic windows and large porches that listen to the land, providing a luxurious, restful, and rejuvenating stay.
 - Total Isolation and Privacy: Unlike crowded public campgrounds, the Rio Bravo Ranch sites are intentionally secluded, giving guests “plenty of space to roam” and the sound of silence only broken by the howl of coyotes.
 - Riparian Wildlife Area: The ranch encompasses a large riparian area with 40-foot-tall cottonwood trees where guests can spot Gambel's Quail, Javelina, and numerous other bird species, including the rare nesting pair of Mexican goshawks.

Customer Reviews
It's seldom that you stay in a place that so perfectly represents its own little corner of the planet. Our stay in Presidio exploring Big Bend could not have been better complemented by our outstanding accommodations. The Rio Bravo Ranch delivers on absolutely every detail, from it's incredible design, the 5 Star service, amenities at your fingertips, and most importantly...the food. Our cook Iris went above and beyond to take care of us during our stay, bringing wonderful new flavours from across the border as well as some familiar favourites. Every aspect of our stay was so well organized by Lauren, this is absolutely the best place to stay in Presidio, period.
I love Rio Bravo Ranch. The owner provided a great house with a firepit and a covered patio. The instructions the owner gives can be a little hard to follow, they only had directions from Presidio, which if you are coming from the other direction (Big Bend Ranch State Park, Big Bend National Park, Terlingua, or Redford) it can be a little bit tricky to get into the driveway. Having the place on Google really helps though. I liked that there was a firepit and my family and I got to make s’mores. I enjoyed having plenty of water in the house, something nice to see because the closest store is 15min away. The covered patio was really nice, and it made the Texas sun bearable. The JBL Extreme Speaker and the Topo Chico’s were a nice touch, which I enjoyed. Being able to see Mexico and the Rio Grande from the comfort of your couch is really something special and I think everyone should enjoy it. I hope Rio Bravo Ranch is a home forever.
Me and two of my friends stayed here for an event and had a blast. The scenery was beautiful and the rugged terrain made for some challenging but enjoyable hiking. The main facility was very nice and comfortable and had a very well set patio area. I would highly recommend it if you're looking for an authentic Southwest Texas experience.
If you plan to explore the west Texas and big bend areas, I highly highly recommend to stay at Rio Bravo Ranch!!! The house is well built & designed, the view from the house is amazing!!! The best vacation house my family have ever stayed. Lauren is the best owner ever as well, always response our questions quickly. As an architect myself, I can’t stop recommending this house to all my colleagues to check out. Although I am back from vacation, I have already missed the view of west Texas and Presidio. I can’t wait to go back again and thank you Lauren and Charlie for sharing this beautiful house and view with us!!!
If quiet and seclusion is required to recharge your soul, this is the place. We just spent 4 days and 3 nights at Rio Bravo Ranch outside of Presidio Texas and it was amazing. This beautifully remote stay offered privacy with tasteful luxury and comfort, surrounded by incredible landscapes with colorful sunsets framed by US and Mexico mountains. This home was thoughtfully designed to blend with the natural topography sitting elevated so one can take in nature’s beauty. The photos we took could not capture the experience and beauty of the Rio Grand as it winds across the desert landscape. After sunset, we found ourselves immersed in dark skies with an abundance of brilliantly magnified stars. We hated to leave and will certainly return, making it a staple in our Big Bend visits.
