Rio Grande National Forest Introduce
Welcome to the Rio Grande National Forest, a vast and diverse natural wonderland located in the heart of southern Colorado. Encompassing over 1.86 million acres, this protected area offers a wide array of outdoor recreational opportunities, stunning scenery, and unique ecosystems that will captivate nature enthusiasts of all ages.
Natural Environment:
The Rio Grande National Forest boasts a remarkable variety of landscapes, ranging from alpine deserts at elevations of 7,600 feet to the majestic peaks of the Sangre de Cristo Wilderness, reaching heights of over 14,300 feet. The forest is home to the headwaters of the mighty Rio Grande River, which carves its way through the rugged terrain, creating breathtaking canyons and valleys.
Visitors can explore diverse ecosystems, including lush forests of ponderosa pine, aspen, and fir, as well as vast expanses of grasslands and alpine tundra. The forest is also a haven for wildlife, including elk, deer, bighorn sheep, black bears, and numerous bird species.
Services and Activities:
The Rio Grande National Forest offers a plethora of activities for outdoor enthusiasts. Hiking is a popular pastime, with trails ranging from easy strolls to challenging climbs. Backpackers can venture into the forest's four wilderness areas – South San Juan, Weminuche, La Garita, and Sangre de Cristo – for a truly immersive experience.
Camping is available at several designated campgrounds within the forest, providing visitors with the opportunity to spend a night under the stars and wake up to the sounds of nature. Fishing is another popular activity, with numerous streams and lakes teeming with trout and other fish species. Anglers can also try their luck in the Rio Grande River itself.
During the winter months, the forest transforms into a snowy playground, offering opportunities for cross-country skiing, snowshoeing, and ice fishing. The nearby town of Creede also boasts a downhill ski area for those seeking a more adrenaline-pumping experience.
Unique Features:
One of the unique features of the Rio Grande National Forest is its rich history and cultural heritage. The area was once home to Native American tribes, and visitors can still find remnants of their presence in the form of ancient artifacts and rock art. The forest also played a role in the Colorado Silver Boom, and remnants of old mining towns and structures can be found throughout the area.
Another highlight of the forest is the abundance of natural hot springs. Several resorts and campgrounds offer visitors the chance to soak in these therapeutic waters and relax amidst the stunning scenery.

In all my years I have never experienced more glorious autumnal scenery! The colors are vibrant and there are different geological marvels every direction you turn. If your schedule does not allow for a fall visit, the latter remains true no matter what time of year you visit. So let not that impede you. Spectacular!
This place is absolutely beautiful! Photos were taken at Trujillo Meadows reservoir. *note, most of the trail is washed out, so there isn't much in the way of hiking. You can't go very far around the lake toward the dam. It look like it would be terrific for canoeing or kayaking!
Always a great place to go visit for the day or camp. Love the outdoors and wilderness. Colorado has beautiful forest everywhere.
One of the most beautiful places I have ever been! Spent time in several little town here and up the Rio Grande River valley. Absolutely recommend spending a few days hiking and driving around.
Weather was pleasant...not too hot. Pictures didn't quite capture the amazing spectacular wildflowers and views. The trail riding was perfect
