It's a testament to the idea that the true value of a camping trip often lies in the shared experiences, the warmth of human connection, and the simple pleasures of being by the water. This ethos is palpable in the feedback from visitors who describe it as a place where "people come back to and create family at," a "small village of people," and "its own world." For many South Dakotans, this communal aspect is precisely what makes a return visit so appealing.
River of the Double Bend Campground is located at 400 W 1st St, Trent, SD 57065, USA. This places it at the entrance of the very small rural town of Trent, right alongside the banks of the Big Sioux River. Its central location makes it accessible from various points in South Dakota, being approximately 25 miles north of Sioux Falls, and also centrally located between Brookings, Madison, and Pipestone, MN.
Accessibility to the campground is generally straightforward, situated near the town entrance. For those navigating, it's easily found within Trent. Being alongside the Big Sioux River is a major advantage for its recreational offerings. The river's condition can vary with weather and season; as one review noted, it can be "very full," sometimes "up 10ft," creating strong currents ideal for floating but not suitable for young children swimming directly in the river due to depth and current. Visitors are advised to exercise caution and assess river conditions upon arrival, especially with inexperienced boaters or children.
Despite its rural setting, the campground is within reasonable driving distance to larger communities, providing access to more extensive services if needed. Its proximity to the Big Sioux River is key to its identity, drawing those who enjoy river-based activities like canoeing and kayaking. The ease of finding the campground within Trent, combined with its immediate access to the river, defines its appeal for local South Dakotans looking for a specific type of riverside experience.

So the river is very full! Up 10ft! Should be an awesome time to float! However i would like to see experienced boaters and it’s ultimately up to you but young children would not be able to swim in this current and it will be over all of your heads! Not trying to scare anyone just being real! Hope to see y’all soon!!!
It’s hard to describe this place, because I never saw something of the like even though I imagine it to be all over the nation. Campground located at the entrance of a very small rural town, alongside a river. It smells like cow, and ( SD?) weather/season brought in lots of bugs and mosquitoes. The latter is the reason why I did not stay long. $12 for tent spot including access to hot unlimited shower! Can’t beat that. The campground: tightly packed with people, RVs, and campers mainly, and some tents. This is a family campground for working families. Many people here know each other for a long time; they sit and drink together at night; they go to Steve’s and drink some more—or vice versa. There are canoes and kayaks. Fish is not good, but the river is. Yes: the 3 or so rooms with toilets and showers are not quite enough if you do not get up early. And it can be dirty because of the packs of kids and grownups. Nothing the owners can do much about. This is a very affordable place that people come back to and create family at. Tribal love. A small village of people who might know each other too much. It’s a special place and its own world.
Stumbled across their campground on a cross country trip. So happy that we did because the place and the couple running it were wonderful! We had the river front to ourselves that night. We will go back again, next time it will be on purpose!
Amazing people. Very friendly... If u want to get out of the city go to Trent and u will be so far from city living.. u won't want to leave.. with out wifi 😔 there is no data for phones but don't worry there's wifi for the kids.... Call ahead!!! Hurry spots will fill up fast for the summer 🌞
Greatest place I have found in South Dakota to camp. The staff are wonderful people and the overall feeling of the place and people there is so relaxing and enjoyable it's surreal. Now in the fall the leaves are changing and the vibrant colors and the wildlife make your morning coffee time a special life event.
