Explore family camping activities that bring all ages together, from outdoor games and scenic hikes to memorable campfire fun that creates lasting memories.
For many Minnesotans, the idea of a long-term escape to the tranquility of a lakeside setting is the epitome of summer. If you're looking for a seasonal camping spot where you can set up a home away from home by the water, RJ's Campground in Fairmont, MN, presents itself as an option. Located on the shores of South Silver Lake, this campground caters specifically to those seeking extended stays, offering a unique opportunity to truly settle into a peaceful lakeside routine.
This article aims to provide a factual and informative overview of RJ's Campground, tailored for local Minnesota users. We will explore its specialized seasonal focus, its beautiful location on a fishing lake, and the amenities it generally offers. However, it is paramount to address significant concerns raised in recent public reviews, particularly regarding sanitation and management responsiveness. Understanding both the appeals and potential drawbacks is essential for any Minnesotan considering RJ's Campground for their long-term outdoor plans.
RJ's Campground is conveniently located at 248 Cottonwood Rd, Fairmont, MN 56031, USA. Fairmont itself is a city in Martin County, Southern Minnesota, known for its Chain of Lakes. RJ's Campground is specifically situated on South Silver Lake, a 252-acre body of water renowned for its diverse fish species and recreational opportunities. This location makes it a relatively accessible destination for many residents across Southern Minnesota, including those from Mankato, Albert Lea, and even a manageable drive from the Twin Cities for a seasonal setup.
The campground's direct frontage on South Silver Lake is a significant draw, providing easy access for boating, fishing, and enjoying the water. While the exact driving experience to the campground will vary based on the specific roads, its address within Fairmont suggests it's within reach for most vehicles. Its placement in a more rural part of the state contributes to the quiet, natural ambiance that many campers seek for extended stays.
RJ's Campground is primarily designed as an all-seasonal campground, meaning it caters to campers who wish to leave their RVs or trailers set up for the entire season rather than short-term overnight stays. This focus shapes the types of services and amenities provided:
It is critically important to address recent and severe concerns raised by multiple reviewers, which directly impact the perception of services at RJ's Campground. Reports from July 2024 describe "raw sewage in garbage bags left in the middle of the road" for an entire day, creating "odors of sewer throughout the campground," and a highly concerning response from the owner that it "wasn't his responsibility." These are very serious issues regarding sanitation, public health, and management accountability. Prospective campers should be aware of these severe criticisms and exercise extreme caution, perhaps contacting the campground directly to inquire about measures taken to address such problems, or seeking more recent, positive assurances regarding cleanliness and waste management, as these reports are highly negative.
Despite the very serious concerns about sanitation, the inherent features of RJ's Campground, if properly managed, could offer certain appeals for seasonal campers:
However, the highlight of a "peaceful" and "relaxing" environment is severely undermined by the aforementioned sewage concerns. A campground's fundamental promise includes basic sanitation and responsible waste management. The negative reviews specifically describe conditions that would make a stay not only unpleasant due to odor and sight but also potentially hazardous to health, particularly for children. The lack of responsibility attributed to management in addressing such a critical issue is a significant deterrent and overrides many potential positives. The presence of features like a playground (as noted in some general campground directories for RJ's, though not explicitly in the provided reviews) makes the sanitation issue even more alarming for families.
For inquiries regarding seasonal site availability, rates, or to address any concerns you may have, you can contact RJ's Campground directly:

Another number previously listed for RJ's Campground in Fairmont is (507) 235-5753, but the 651 number appears to be more current from their direct website. It is advisable to call the provided number and speak with the management for the most current information and to specifically inquire about the issues raised in public reviews regarding sanitation and cleanliness before committing to a seasonal stay.
The campground also has a basic website (rjslakesidecampground.com) which provides some information about seasonal rates and contact details.
For Minnesotans specifically seeking a dedicated, long-term seasonal camping spot, RJ's Campground on South Silver Lake in Fairmont could potentially offer a consistent lakeside retreat. Its focus on seasonal leases means less turnover and the potential to build a community with fellow long-term campers. The lake itself is a genuine asset, providing excellent opportunities for fishing and various water-based activities throughout the warmer months. For those in Southern Minnesota, its accessibility allows for a regular escape to a tranquil setting without extensive travel.
However, it is impossible to conclude this overview without a strong emphasis on the severe negative feedback regarding sanitation and management responsiveness. For any local considering RJ's Campground, these are critical points that demand direct investigation and satisfactory assurances from the campground management before a commitment, especially for a seasonal lease. While the concept of a long-term lakeside home away from home is appealing, the fundamental aspects of health, safety, and responsible management cannot be overlooked.
In summary, while RJ's Campground offers the framework of a convenient seasonal lakeside haven in Southern Minnesota, prospective campers must carefully weigh the reported environmental and management concerns against the appeal of its location and seasonal model. Due diligence and direct communication are strongly advised to ensure that the actual experience aligns with the peaceful and comfortable seasonal retreat that campers ultimately seek.
