Introduction / Overview: Rockford SRA Tent Campground Area 5 – Nebraska’s Quiet Waterfront Escape
For Nebraska residents who cherish traditional, quiet, and budget-friendly camping—especially those focused on tent camping—the Rockford SRA Tent Campground Area 5 offers a compelling destination. Part of the larger Rockford Lake State Recreation Area (SRA), this specific area is known for providing a peaceful, rustic experience on the northern side of the 150-acre Rockford Lake. While the SRA as a whole offers both electric RV pads and non-pad sites, Area 5 is specifically geared toward the tent camper seeking shade, natural surroundings, and close proximity to the water.
This is an authentic state recreation area experience, managed by the Nebraska Game and Parks Commission, which means it emphasizes accessible outdoor recreation over resort-style amenities. The campground is praised by visitors for its nice shady areas for pitching tents and for the serene atmosphere created by its location away from the more developed RV sections. It’s an ideal setting for Nebraska families, solo travelers, and small groups who prioritize proximity to nature, fishing, and water sports. Its commitment to a rustic setting, as evidenced by the lack of modern shower houses or dump stations, ensures that the focus remains entirely on the stunning lake and the surrounding natural beauty of the 400-acre park. Here, the emphasis is on a simple, refreshing escape into the Nebraska outdoors, complete with abundant wildlife and peaceful, uncrowded spaces.
Location and Accessibility in Southeast Nebraska
Rockford SRA Tent Campground Area 5 is situated within the Rockford Lake State Recreation Area, a prime piece of preserved nature located in Gage County in Southeast Nebraska. The general area address is near Holmesville, NE 68310, USA, and it is geographically located about 8 miles east and 2 miles south of the nearby city of Beatrice.
This strategic location makes it an easy day trip or weekend destination for residents of Lincoln (approximately 54 minutes away) and the surrounding communities. Access to the campground is typically via paved and well-maintained county roads leading off major highways like U.S. 136. While the campground is publicly accessible, it maintains a secluded feel, as it is dispersed across the large recreation area. Tent Area 5 is often found on the northern, quieter end of the lake, accessed by going past the main parking areas toward the designated walk-in zones. This slightly removed positioning helps ensure the "peace and quiet" that visitors appreciate, even while the popular lake is available for recreation nearby.
As with all Nebraska State Recreation Areas, a Nebraska Park Entry Permit is required for vehicle entry, which can typically be purchased on-site or in advance.

Went to the campsite on the northern side of the lake, was completely empty. Nice shady areas for camping and picnics. Each campground has enough for 4-5 groups, just don't expect much privacy if other people are there because it's all pretty open.
Super nice campground if you go past the parking lot into the walk in areas they are nice and shaded and waterfront spots. Not much for bugs on my visit so that’s good lots of wildlife tho.
