Discover Rocky Cove Campground: Your Lakeside Retreat in Southeast Kansas
For those in Kansas seeking a beautiful and accessible getaway into nature, Rocky Cove Campground at Crawford State Park offers an exceptional destination. Nestled in the picturesque setting of southeast Kansas, on the edge of what many locals consider to be the Ozarks' gentle influence, this campground provides a perfect blend of natural beauty, recreational activities, and convenient amenities. It’s more than just a place to park your RV or pitch a tent; it’s a site rich with history and community spirit, centered around the stunning 150-acre Crawford State Fishing Lake, also affectionately known as Farlington Lake by area residents.
The entire park, and by extension the campground, has a unique historical flavor, dating back to the 1930s when the lake and initial infrastructure were constructed by the dedicated young men of the Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC). This legacy is preserved, offering a special connection to one of the nation’s most important conservation and jobs programs of the Great Depression era. This heritage, combined with the lush surrounding woodland—a naturalist’s delight—creates a truly distinctive Kansas outdoor experience. For anyone looking for a relaxing springtime vacation or a fun weekend trip full of fishing, boating, and hiking, Rocky Cove Campground stands out as a prime choice.
Location and Accessibility
Rocky Cove Campground is situated within Crawford State Park, placing it in the heart of southeast Kansas. The location offers excellent accessibility for Kansas residents and visitors from surrounding areas, being roughly nine miles north of Girard, Kansas, right off Highway 7. Its setting near the Frontier Military Historic Byway also makes it a great stop for travelers exploring the historic landmarks of the region, such as Fort Scott National Historic Site.
The official address for the park, which encompasses the campground, is: Farlington, KS 66734, USA. This proximity to Farlington allows for a secluded natural feel while remaining easily reachable by paved state roads. Access to the campground itself is straightforward, though local users should be aware of some unique traffic patterns. The roads that run through the campsite area also provide the only access to numerous private homes around the lake. While the posted speed limit is a reasonable 25 mph, campers have noted that the steady flow of local traffic, particularly during typical morning rush hours (around 6:30 AM), can make the roads feel busy, as vehicles pass quite close to some camping spots. Visitors are encouraged to be mindful of their surroundings, particularly with children and pets, and to adhere strictly to all posted speed limits for the safety of all park patrons and residents.
Services Offered
The amenities at Rocky Cove Campground are designed to enhance your stay, whether you are in a large RV or a simple tent setup. The campground offers a variety of site types to meet different needs, though it's important to note the different utility hookup options when making a reservation. The park's commitment to visitor convenience is clear in the range of services available across the campground area:
- Campsite Utility Options: Sites are available with both electric (30 and 50 amp) and water hookups. However, a key detail to remember is that campsites located closest to the lake often provide electric-only service, while those set back typically offer the full electric/water utility combination.
- Sanitary Facilities: The park features modern shower houses with restrooms located within the campground loop for camper comfort and convenience. There are also vault toilets available in certain areas.
- RV/Trailer Services: A Sanitary Dump Station is conveniently provided within Crawford State Park, essential for RV and trailer users to properly dispose of grey and black water (dumping of grey water is strictly prohibited on campsites).
- Recreational Amenities: Picnic tables and campfire rings are standard at each site, encouraging outdoor dining and traditional camping experiences.
- Reservations: Campsites are reservable, allowing for convenient pre-planning, which is highly recommended, especially during peak season.
- Potable Water: Beyond the sites with water hookups, potable water hydrants are scattered throughout the park for easy access.
- Pet Policy: Pets are generally welcome but must be restrained at all times by a leash or tether no longer than 10 feet and are not allowed in designated swimming areas or public buildings.
Features / Highlights
The attraction of Rocky Cove Campground extends far beyond its standard facilities, offering a unique blend of historical, natural, and recreational highlights that make it a favorite for many Kansas campers:
- Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC) History: The park is steeped in the legacy of the CCC. Visitors can explore a dedicated, paved CCC Memorial Interpretive Trail (.25 mile) that features a small museum, historical equipment, and a statue honoring the troops who constructed the lake in the 1930s, offering a fascinating look back at the site's origins.
- Lakeside Access and Activities: The 150-acre Crawford Lake is the center of activity. The area boasts two conveniently located boat ramps, a swimming beach for designated swimming (liquor and beer are prohibited on the beach), and courtesy docks.
- Fishing: Anglers enjoy excellent fishing opportunities in the lake, which is stocked with species like channel catfish, crappie, and striped bass. A fish feeder is located at the far south-eastern end of the campground to enhance the fishing potential.
- Hiking and Biking Trails: The surrounding woodlands, part of the lush foliage on the edge of the Ozarks, are explored via several trails. The Deer Run Nature Trail is a popular hardened, self-guided interpretive trail for viewing local flora and fauna. The Spiderleg Bridge Trail takes visitors through the site of a historic 19th-century U.S. military outpost.
- Scenic Beauty: The campground is nestled in a shady, mature oak forest, providing ample shade. Campers on the lake side of the road are treated to gorgeous sunsets that provide a marvelous backdrop for the lake at evening time.
- Farlington Fish Hatchery: An interpretive trail connects the park with the nearby Farlington Fish Hatchery, built shortly after the lake, providing another point of interest for those interested in local conservation efforts.

Customer Reviews
Nice campground. Built by CCC and has a little museum about the troop that built the lake, back in the thirties. One concern was the amount of traffic that comes through the camp sites. There are many private homes around the lake and the only access is through the camp grounds! The speed limit is 25 mph, but when you're sitting by your camp and a car goes by 10 feet from you, it seems too fast and too close. And at 6:30 or so, people start going to work, I assume, making for a little rush hour.
If you want both electric and water, you won't be able to camp on the lake side of the road. The cites on the lake side are electric only.
nice place to camp. everyone had fun, lots of relaxing.
