Family Camping Activities for All Ages: Games, Hiking, and Campfire Fun
Explore family camping activities that bring all ages together, from outdoor games and scenic hikes to memorable campfire fun that creates lasting memories.
For local Kansans and visitors looking for a convenient, amenity-rich escape near the vibrant city of Manhattan, the Rocky Ford Campground—part of the expansive Tuttle Creek State Park—stands out as a highly recommended destination. This area of the State Park is particularly popular for its strategic location, offering a blend of natural beauty and easy access to local urban amenities.
Rocky Ford Campground is known for providing a traditional and comfortable camping experience, especially for RV owners. The sites, many of which are large and shaded, are equipped with essential hookups and recreational staples like fire pits, picnic tables, and lantern hooks. This attention to detail ensures that campers can quickly settle in and enjoy the great outdoors without unnecessary hassle.
A key advantage repeatedly highlighted by patrons is the excellent value. Campers often note the reasonably priced nightly rates, which become even more economical with the purchase of a Kansas State Park annual pass. This affordability, combined with the quality of the facilities and the beautiful surroundings, makes Rocky Ford a top choice for extended stays—some guests happily settle in for weeks at a time.
The experience here is diverse. On one hand, you have the quiet, nature-focused atmosphere, complete with pleasant trails (some paved), opportunities for fishing, and the calming presence of local wildlife, such as owls and eagles. On the other hand, being a popular State Park site, especially on busy summer weekends, the atmosphere can shift to a more lively, social setting, as some guests have noted. This duality means the experience can change depending on the day of the week, offering peace and quiet during the week and a vibrant, communal spirit on weekends.
Overall, Rocky Ford Campground delivers a high-quality, flexible, and affordable camping option right on the edge of the Little Apple, offering a true taste of the Kansas outdoors supported by necessary modern comforts.

The infrastructure at Rocky Ford is clearly designed with the modern camper in mind. The availability of water and electric hookups at numerous sites, along with multiple dump stations, minimizes the practical challenges of RV life. The continuous commitment to maintenance, such as the reported fresh coat of paint and cleaning of the showers, reflects the park's dedication to providing a pleasant environment for its visitors.
Recreation is abundant and easily accessible. The campground is bordered by the beautiful Tuttle Creek Lake, offering opportunities for swimming at the nearby beach, boating, and kayaking. For those who prefer land-based activities, the scenic trails—including the Western Heritage Trail, which parallels the Blue River—provide excellent walking and fishing access right from the campground area. These well-maintained paths offer a genuine chance to appreciate the Flint Hills landscape without venturing far from your site.
Furthermore, the unique, local attractions just outside the campground’s edge enhance the experience. The proximity to The Little Grill, a highly-rated local restaurant known for its "Jam-merican" cuisine (a creative blend of Jamaican and American food), means campers can enjoy a delicious, unique dining experience that is often within walking distance or a short bike ride. This blend of remote nature and local flavor is a defining characteristic of a stay at Rocky Ford.
The long-term camping options available in the Rocky Ford loops, such as Tall Timber, are particularly appealing for those working in the Manhattan area or seeking an extended seasonal escape, cementing the campground's reputation as a valuable resource in North Central Kansas.

Quiet, trails are nice, and some even paved. We stayed in Tall Timber Loop for 2 weeks and will definitely go back. There's Fishing, boating, kayaking, a swim beach, very large spots and smaller spots, back in, all with a lantern hook, firepit, and picnic table. Very reasonably priced. Our site was $24/night till we got the annual park pass at the office. Then it dropped to $14/night. Highly recommend that! Water and electric hookups, with several dump stations. Lots of shade where we were, but there are sunnier spots available. The Little Grill restaurant was a mile from our spot so we walked there. Delicious! There were a couple of owls across the road from us that we heard everyday. Bathroom has 3 stalls, and was cleaned daily. Showers have hot water, decent pressure, but could use a little attention. Loved it here so much! UPDATE!!! 8/28/25 Still loving it here! We've stayed here several times since my original review. The showers got a fresh coat of paint this spring!
Beautiful place to camp, but be prepared for wild and loud music and people. There was multiple dogs fighting at this camp area, because people were letting their dogs walk around off leash, there's not as many Park employees that come through, because it's way off in the back. This was on a weekend, I have been told that during the week it's a much different camp experience.
First time camping here, and it was so much fun. Area is very quiet, shady, with view of the pond. Electricity and water hookups work good. Showers with hotwater and toilets are avialable. They could be cleaner though. There is a short trail going to Rocky Ford State fishing area and waterfall. We will definetely be back.
Beautiful, part of the large Rocky Pond campground at Tuttle Lake. Lots of trees, level gravel sites, electric and H2O. Didn't get 5 because the showers were out of order, and the closest are on the other side of the pond. Also, the rinse hydrant at the dump station didn't work. Heads up, this seems to always be a busy camp, I'd recommend reservations.
This State Park has plenty of deep campsites to accommodate any size RV with 50 amp service. Lots of trails to explore and plenty of amenities. On the downside, all the buildings are long overdue for a coat of paint, and most of the bathhouse have no hand soap or a way to dry your hands. No air-conditioning in the bathhouse. Overall, though, it's a good place to stay.
