Stayed the last weekend of October for 2 nights. Campground was pretty much empty with only 3-4 people the entire weekend out of the 30 spots. Vault toilets were spotless and fantastic access to trails for running / MTB that are literally right off the campground. There's a cell tower about a mile away with nothing blocking it, so we had super fast 5G with T-Mobile. The campground is on a dead-end road, so the only people coming are campers or a handful of folks who want to access the trailhead. As such, it's super quiet at night. Some notes on the trailer section (1-10). Site 2 is pretty much non-existent. It may fit a small pop-up or teardrop, but that's it. Sites 1-7 have great views of Canyon City off in the distance. Site 3 (where we were) and 4 are super close. 4 was empty, so no issues, but otherwise there wouldn't be much privacy. 8-10 are separated a bit on the north side. There's a nice picnic shelter near there, but you don't get great views. I'd argue the $20/night fee is fair. It's in line with the USFS campgrounds and having checked out Red Canyon park on the north side of town which has free camping, I'd say that this is certainly a lot more convenient, especially if you have a trailer.

The best paid primitive camping I have ever had! Perfect places to put the 2 tents we are allowed as well as a very nice place to sit where the fire ring is located. There is a picnic table in each campsite. There was plenty of room for the chairs the 10 people we were with brought, but there was also seating on the rocks around the fire area. The ranger station is less than 1/2 mile from all 12 spots in the campground, someone is always on duty if you need them. Quiet time is from 10pm-6am which is really nice, dogs are welcome but need to be on a leash so that they don't go wandering into other camps. If you forgot to bring wood for your fire you can buy it from the ranger station at a reasonable price There are many trails you can walk where you will find stunning views! There are restrooms scattered around the area within walking distance of the campsites as well as bear- proof dumpsters for all your trash. 10/10 would highly recommend!!

We hiked to Fremont Peak. It's a decent workout with a bit of a scramble at the end. Nothing too major. Gorgeous 360° views. You can see down into the Royal Gorge to the south/west and Cañon City to the east. We were treated to the most beautiful moonrise (full) on the way down!

Really beautiful well set up FREE dispersed camping sites here for RV’s, Cars ( even low clearance ) and tents. I believe there’s about 10 or so sites for RVs and cars. They are kinda close together but we’ve never really had a bad experience here with neighbors. If you plan on tent camping there’s tons of spots to choose from. Most have shade, fire pits with grill tops and a few with picnic tables. There’s valet toilets but bring your own TP! Max stay time is 3 days.
