Roza Campground is renowned for its picturesque setting amidst basalt cliffs and rolling desert hills, characteristic of the Yakima River Canyon, a designated State Scenic Byway. It provides a peaceful backdrop for unwinding and connecting with nature, making it a beloved spot for Washington residents looking to escape the everyday hustle. This article will explore what makes Roza Campground an appealing choice for local users, covering its amenities, recreational highlights, and practical details to help you plan your visit.
Roza Campground is a small, developed recreation site located along the gentle Yakima River within the captivating Yakima River Canyon. Administered by the Bureau of Land Management (BLM), this campground is part of a series of popular river access points that cater to outdoor enthusiasts. It features a limited number of well-defined campsites, typically designed to accommodate both tent campers and those with smaller RVs or vans. The primary appeal of Roza Campground lies in its direct river access and its beautiful, natural surroundings. It serves as a popular take-out point for those floating the Yakima River, often concluding rafting or kayaking trips that originate upstream.
The atmosphere at Roza is generally relaxed, providing a no-frills camping experience. While it lacks some modern conveniences like potable water and electrical hookups, it offers essential amenities for a comfortable stay in nature. Its proximity to the flowing river, combined with the dramatic canyon landscape, creates a serene environment ideal for reconnecting with the outdoors. It's a place that, despite its rustic nature and occasional sounds of passing trains, leaves a lasting impression on visitors, encouraging repeat stays.
Roza Campground is conveniently situated at 8681 S Canyon Rd, Yakima, WA 98901, USA. This address places it squarely within the renowned Yakima River Canyon, a 27-mile stretch of scenic beauty between Ellensburg and Yakima, Washington. The campground is easily accessible via State Route 821, which parallels the river and is recognized as Washington’s first State Scenic Byway. This makes for a picturesque and straightforward drive from both Ellensburg to the north and Yakima to the south.
For Washington locals, Roza Campground offers excellent accessibility. It's a manageable drive from major population centers in Central Washington, providing a convenient escape into nature without requiring extensive travel. Its location makes it an ideal day-use spot for stretching legs, using restrooms, and letting pets get a drink, as well as a prime overnight camping destination. The clear signage along Highway 821 ensures easy navigation to the site. While cell service can be spotty within the canyon, Roza generally has some coverage, which is a practical consideration for modern travelers.

Customer Reviews
Great little campground with 6 spots that fit 10 people each (per their rules). Flat spots without rocks right by the river. No potable water but reasonably well-maintained pit toilets. Do note that at this site (as well as for the other sites in the campground) the rail line is on the other side of the river, and a few freight trains came through during our one-night stay. Some trucks on the road as well, but not crazy. Also they seem to come by pretty early checking if you pay (8 am). Looked like they had a credit card reader but we didn’t try it. Would stay again!
Never camped here but great place to stop and stretch, use the restroom, let the dogs get a drink, and take pictures. Bird watching. End of the line for water recreation like rafting, kayaks, paddleboards.
The water was dirty and dog poop wasn’t picked up . It was noisy and small but if you have jet skies definitely a good spot. Not worth the $5 because the Discovery park pass wasn’t valid. Went a mile down the street and found a better place.
Day use seems fine, but it's not what I look for in an overnight camp. BLM daily or annual pass needed. America the Beautiful and Golden Age passes can also be used. Camping fees; sometimes sites can be reserved other times of the year they are first come first served. Paved parking with many stalls; stalls also for boat trailers Fire rings and grates. Charcoal BBQ stands. Paved boat launch. Vault toilets. No drinking water.
There's not much beauty but it's good if you're floating or boating!
