Customer Reviews
Drivers Flat Rd from the staging area down to the campground is well-maintained hardpacked gravel but it is very steep in spots. Nothing a standard passenger car can't handle but there's evidence that folks who lost traction have dug ruts. The road and the campground are closed October 15 - April 15. You can still park at the top (it's a fee area) and hike down and back if you're in decent shape. Equestrians and bicyclists are also OK during the off season. There are 5 designated campsites, each with a picnic table. Advance registration is required and no ground fires or barbecues are permitted. There are pit toilets and parking for day visitors. There is also drive up access to the river for rafters both above and below some rapids.
It was so hot! I mean 110+ °f. Don't come to this campsite during the summer unless you want to feel the burn or be in freezing American river the whole trip. I think this campsite would be much better if come during early spring or late fall. Don't make the same mistake I did. My truck thermometer was saying it got up to 118 the one day we stayed here.
Though the drive there is a little rough and bumpy, it is absolutely gorgeous. You have to like roughing it though.
Spooky. Treacherous gravel road. Isolated place. Water is very cold with strong current. Beautiful, though.
I have always loved visiting here for the day and we just had our first opportunity to stay the night. The campgrounds are basic and the rafting companies are coming in and out during the afternoon, but the riverside location can’t be beat!!
