Great camping spot for youth. Good little 2.3 mile hike from North Canyon. There are three main group spots. Two large ones and one small one. Plenty of trees to hammock and tent.
The trail after Elephant Rock is generally softer and narrower. Rocky in only a few places. Mostly shaded by trees. Fewer people make the trek higher. Mostly bikers. A few runners. It’s more peaceful. Enjoy!
Just made the hike a few days ago. 12-mile round trip from Mueller Park trailhead to Rudy’s Flat and back. It took about 5 hours. Budget 6 hours for exploration and more relax times along the way. I’m a more casual/exercise hiker. Boost in short spurts. Great views, often smells nice along the trails. From the trailhead to Elephant Rock the scenery is more deciduous, as in you’re more likely to see autumn colors. From Elephant Rock to Rudy’s Flat the greenery is considerably more alpine in nature. More secluded. The trail is also much quieter since less people continue on from Elephant Rock. The trail is almost always shaded as others have said, so sunscreen isn’t really needed unless you’re at Rudy’s Flat at noontime. Know that going back down isn’t all that much faster than coming up. On the way down, sometimes you’ll meet biking teams and you’ll have to wait for them. I have seen a minimal amount of “Karen” and “COVIDiots” on this trail. From my experience, 25% of the people I meet are super nice, 50% are neutral, and the rest are unresponsive or oblivious. Not a bad distribution. I’ll definitely make the trek again...after the soreness wears off 🙃.
Rudy's is a great ride and has fantastic views. From the trail, right below the campgrounds, you can see from the SLC airport all the way to Ogden.
Amazing backpacking spot. A creek fit too filter out of is only a half mile north on the trail, and the hike isn't very long.
