Salacoa Park is a good place in the Ranger area to escape to just relax and forget about your worries for a while. There's camping, fishing, and small beach area. The place could use some improvements. But still a decent place to enjoy nature. My favorite reason to come to this place. Is to get on paddle, riding, or any other non gas engine boat, and go deep into the lake and contemplate the surroundings. Take your camera, and be patience ,, cause you can photograph some beautiful birds, beautiful Great Blue Herons, and if you're lucky enough. Bald eagles. Sadly she was flying to fast for me to get a more accurate focus. But here it is
First time there and first time ever kayaking, AND let me say it was the WORST experience. Caretaker of the park locked me, my boyfriend & his brother out bc we were “late”. We were kayaking on the way back when he honked and returned right away and ended up being at the gate at 8:10. The gate closes at 8. Once again first time ever kayaking. We called the caretaker to unlock the gate and he said he purposely locked the gate to teach us a lesson and ended up calling the police bc he wanted them to escort him out to unlock the gate.. PAID for fishing for ONE hour when it’s $3 for an hour and we put 5 in it anyway bc he had no change. He called this lake “his” lake whenever he’s just taking care of it by our tax dollars paying him, he hung up the phone everytime we called to ask to unlock the gate, he was rude, and he also said he would do this to anybody if they didn’t get off the lake in “time”. What if someone had an emergency? There was no reason for any of this. We sat for an hour until police arrived bc once again the caretaker did not want to open it. Police arrived and right away asked the caretaker to unlock it. Even the police thought the situation was nonsense. First experience and the last time I will be there. Wanted to warn y’all before it happened to any of you guys. So ridiculous… Conclusion, we have video evidence and it will be posted!
Oh man why are families not enjoying this wonderful man made park. It's got a beach, fishing $3., small boat rental rentals $10. Not the best rentals but hey 10. Dollars boat dock RV park overlooking the water very clean
I read some of the negative reviews, and I'm really surprised because I've never experienced these things. 1. Steep roads in the camping area. Well, duh... this is a MOUNTAIN camping area. If you want flat roads in a campground, then find one that is located in a meadow or something. 2. Black mushy soil near the lake edge. That's what a lake edge is, unless you want to pave it. And it is NOT effluent from the bathrooms. They go into a septic tank. 3. Mosquitoes and chiggers. Well, it's a lake, with lots of wetland around it, so there will be mosquitoes. Wear mosquito repellent. The lake runs between 125 and 140 acres (depending on rainfall) and has a lot of coves, so there will be marshy areas. And this is Georgia... there will be chiggers. End of story. Spraying for chiggers and mosquitoes would contaminate the lake water, anyway. 4. Racism. I can't address this directly, but I can say that I've never witnessed it. If it happened as perceived, I'm truly sorry to hear about it. However, I can say that having one or two people who work there act racist, is not necessarily an indication of the whole staff. 5. Liars. Roger Peace is an honest guy. If he says the county policy says he can't give money back, then he can't give money back. A lot of how you get treated by people depends on how YOU treat THEM.
Pros: Great Staff, facilities were nice, fishing was decent. Would be great for a family. Cons: I requested "Primitive camping," thinking I wouldn't have a soul around me (the camping where you can sleep naked in a hammock, if you want). There were "facilities," can't even do your business in the woods. Granted; holiday weekend = crowds. But the sites are just too close together for my liking. Overall: will visit again, but not to camp out.
