Not busy even on a summer weekend. Be aware the winds get VERY strong around dusk and into the early night. Our tent didn’t collapse but we ended up sleeping in the car with how loud the wind was and how much it was bowing in the tent poles. Otherwise it’s a really nice *free campground. *with SWA pass

We love camping here after visiting the sand dunes and Zapata falls. We've been here in May and February. Both times the bathrooms were closed and appear to be disconnected so don't count on them. It is free to stay here if you have a Colorado fishing, wildlife, hunting etc permit which I imagine keeps it from getting crowded with out of state people. The views are spectacular. We park facing the sand dunes and wake up to beautiful mountain views. Dogs are allowed on leash or actively hunting. We got to see the crane migration on this last trip. I wouldn't likely spend a whole day just here but it's a great free camping spot.

I'm a boondocker, so I usually camp at free places, like BLM land, but I bought a Colorado fishing license which gives me access to camping at some of the state's wildlife areas. Just pulled in here today, and I like the place. Lots of RV spots with electricity, but no water. Nice scenery. Usable 5G signal on AT&T. The camp host is a nice guy who's been on duty for about 6 years. I rate this "Well Worth a Stop If You're in the Area and Need a Place to Camp".

Fun place to visit for a picnic. It is always neat to see where the stream from the Great Sand Dunes ends up. Looked like a nice place to camp too!
