The final primitive camp site on the backpacking trail along the north end of the main Dunefield. 11.6 difficult miles from the Horse Trailer Parking Lot near the campground, the site is located in a grove of cottonwood trees along Sand Creek, a wooded stream that flows west along the north edge of the dunes. While the main trail requires a hard hump over stretches of sand, the camping area can theoretically be reached from the Liberty Gate trailhead south of Crestone. Despite the travail, Sand Creek is the only primitive site that allows campfires.
