AMAZING— one word to describe Sandy Beach Campground! We loved that it was quiet (we were one of three sites taken), the lakeside sites were large with gorgeous views, and the vault toilets were clean! We couldn’t ask for more in a campground. Water access right from our camp site was a bonus. If you want to access the beach area it’s just a short walk from the campground! Wood for fires is also available in the campground ($6 per bundle, cash or check) We plan to make our visit to Sandy Beach an annual one.

I saw a complaint on here about it not being kid-friendly... the state parks and forest are here for everyone to enjoy; if someone complained about kids, that is their preference, not a reflection on the campground or the people in charge of it. This campground is a hidden gem in the state and it's weird and unprofessional for a guide from a competing area an hour from here is crapping on a place that so many other people enjoy.

A scenic and peaceful spot, one of the most remote rustic campgrounds among the many within the Northern Highland American Legion State Forest. You cannot hear any noise from highways or roads at this location on a summer night. Getting here involves driving a short distance on a partially gravel road, though roads within the campground itself are paved. The grounds and facilities are incredibly maintained. It's evident some thought was put into the design of this place. Plenty of vegetation and spacing surround most all campsites. Several foot paths link the inland segment of the campground loop to the lakeside segment. Paths continue to the lake between sites, so you'll have access to the shoreline regardless of what site you choose. Even these cut-through paths are fairly secluded from campsites. I only heard a generator for a couple hours on just one day while spending three days here across an August weekend - far less generator noise than I've encountered at some of the more popular campgrounds in the state forest. There were more tents and fewer RVs here in comparison to the forest's modern campgrounds. If you enjoy the rustic nature of this place in its current form, visit soon. A recent revision to the state forest's master plan indicates the intent to convert this to a modern campground, potentially adding electricity, flush toilets, showers and other infrastructure. For now, this remains a gem of a location to get away and enjoy nature with basic amenities and surreal surroundings.

Nice campground wth alot of trees between sites. Some sites right off the water, 2 walk in sites, several in the back. Out houses are clean. Has a water pump. Nice little beach with picnic tables and a bbq, if you follow the trail by the walk in sites.
