Sandy Beach West Campground offers features that capitalize on the unique geology and ecology of the Great Salt Plains area, providing memorable recreational opportunities found nowhere else in Oklahoma.

  • Selenite Crystal Digging: The area is the only place in the world where the hourglass-shaped selenite crystal is found. The designated digging area, approximately 15 miles from the park, is open seasonally (typically April 1 - October 15) and is a must-do adventure.
  • The "Amazing" Bathrooms: The air-conditioned, clean, and well-stocked shower and restroom facilities provide a genuine luxury rarely found in state park camping, significantly enhancing the stay.
  • Direct Beach Access: The campground is located "very close to the beach area of the lake," providing easy access for swimming, sunbathing, and general relaxation on the sandy shore.
  • Spectacular Sunsets and Birding: The wide-open vistas over the Great Salt Plains Lake are renowned for producing beautiful sunsets. The proximity to the Salt Plains National Wildlife Refuge makes this area a premier spot for bird watching, especially during migration seasons (notably whooping cranes).
  • Water and Fishing: The Great Salt Plains Lake is a prime spot for fishing (catfish, saugeye, etc.) and other shallow-water activities like canoeing and kayaking, though boaters should be aware of the lake’s general shallowness.
  • Crucial Pre-Trip Note: Due to the natural environment, customers strongly recommend bringing ample bug repellent, candles, and bracelets, as mosquitos can be "extremely bad" during certain times, particularly after dark.

Nice rv park with water and electricity. There's a dump station at river road campground about 1/4 of a mile away. This campground is very close to the beach area of the lake. The bathrooms are amazing with showers and air-conditioned and extremely clean I saw people cleaning and stocking them multiple times during my weekend stay. The only downside is we showed up after dark and the mosquitos were extremely bad requiring us to leave and go get more bug spray, candles, and bracelets. I would highly recommend bringing these things with you if camping here.

Well I usually do primitive camping 🏕 but the options are slim in the area so when im out here, This place was a delight. The camp host Teresa was very helpful and kind. The facilities were in good condition and the sunsets are beautiful. Lots of bird watching and digging to do!

Yesterday they opened a comfort station at this campground. So there are two toilets and two showers (flushing, free) that are currently in brand new condition!! There is one comfort station at this tent site that is reservable online and a second at the main Sandy Beach campground off the main road, also reservable online. Awesome! We loved these quiet tent sites right on the water. We experienced higher winds than some of the other surrounding sites because of being right on the main lake. So, we actually had to drop our tent poles to the ground during the day, until the wind passed. We were site 5 but there was only one other camper on the other side of the whole lot. I talked to the receptionist at the office, and she said that if there is a campground that is not reservable online but has a fire pit, you can pay at the office directly to stay there.

Shower building is distant from most tent sites (over 1/4 mile); no benches or shelves in bathhouse or restroom buildings; shower doors only 4' tall and don't lock, so privacy is lacking; plentiful hot water; hand soap, paper towels, and tp are available
