Section 13 Camp Introduce
🌲 Introduction / Overview: Your Gateway to the Superior Hiking Trail Backcountry
For outdoor enthusiasts and dedicated backpackers across Minnesota, the mention of the Superior Hiking Trail (SHT) conjures images of rugged terrain, sweeping forest views, and the majestic North Shore landscape. Among the many established backcountry campsites along this renowned trail, Section 13 Camp stands out as a highly desirable and memorable stop. Located near the charming community of Finland, MN, this site offers a true wilderness camping experience, acting as a crucial rest point and a destination in itself for those trekking the challenging SHT.
Unlike traditional drive-up campgrounds, Section 13 Camp is a dedicated, first-come, first-served backpacking site provided by the Superior Hiking Trail Association. It is designed to immerse you in the natural beauty of the area, offering a rustic experience that rewards the effort of the journey. Local hikers know this section is famous for its dramatic rock cliffs and the spectacular inland views they afford, particularly during sunrise and sunset. If you’re planning a multi-day trek or just a strenuous overnight, Section 13 Camp provides the essential infrastructure for a safe and rewarding night under the stars in the stunning Lake County wilderness.
The area surrounding the campsite is part of a particularly beautiful stretch of the trail, featuring hikes through boreal forests and climbs up maple ridges that are renowned for magnificent fall colors. It embodies the classic North Shore hiking experience, combining physical challenge with breathtaking natural beauty. As a local user, embracing this kind of backcountry camping is an essential part of the Minnesota outdoor tradition, a chance to disconnect and fully appreciate the state's exceptional wilderness.

📍 Location and Accessibility: A Rewarding Hike-In Destination
Section 13 Camp is located on the Superior Hiking Trail (SHT), a designated footpath along the North Shore of Lake Superior. Its official location places it near the town of Finland, MN, making it an accessible, albeit strenuous, destination for section-hikers and overnight backpackers from the Twin Cities and Duluth areas. The camp itself is a hike-in-only site, meaning accessibility is defined by the trail itself, which is often rocky, rooty, and features significant elevation changes typical of the SHT.
The nearest primary access point is the Lake County Road 6 Trailhead parking lot. From Highway 61, you would drive inland on Lake County Road 6 (a paved road) for approximately 2 to 2.5 miles to find the signed trailhead and parking area. While the trailhead is generally considered easy to reach by vehicle, the hike to the actual Section 13 Camp can be moderately difficult, involving a climb over rocky terrain to reach the spectacular views and the campsite itself. For many, the reward far outweighs the challenge, with the dramatic cliffs often located just a short distance from the main tent pads.
Connectivity to other major North Shore points is a key benefit. It is situated roughly between Tettegouche State Park and the Sonju Lake area, making it a perfect segment for a longer backpacking trip. While there are no paved roads leading directly to the campsite, the relatively easy drive to the County Road 6 trailhead ensures that local users have a straightforward way to begin their wilderness experience.

⛺ Services Offered
As a backcountry site on the Superior Hiking Trail, Section 13 Camp offers essential, rustic services designed to support Leave No Trace principles and ensure a comfortable stay for backpackers. These services are deliberately minimal to maintain the wilderness feel:
- Designated, cleared areas for multiple tents (often multiple tent pads, including an upper and lower area).
 - Communal fire ring with a log bench for shared use and cooking.
 - A backcountry latrine (or privy), a necessary facility for waste disposal.
 - No permits, fees, or reservations are required—all SHT campsites operate on a first-come, first-served basis, with the expectation that campers will share the site if necessary.
 - The site is near a trail section that provides access to spectacular views, serving as a natural amenity.
 - The campsite is generally near a water source (a creek or stream) for filtering, though some reports suggest the immediate area of the campsite itself may lack a reliable source, requiring hikers to fill up at a creek half a mile north or south on the trail. Note: All water must be filtered or treated before consumption.
 - A bench with a seat back is sometimes available at the fire ring, offering a "luxury" amenity on the trail.

🌟 Features / Highlights
Section 13 Camp is treasured by the local hiking community for its distinct features and remarkable natural highlights:
- Breathtaking Cliff Views: The primary draw is the proximity to the Section 13 Cliffs, offering one of the most stunning panoramic vistas of the Baptism River valley and the surrounding boreal forest. These cliffs are an outstanding spot for photography, viewing fall colors, and watching the sunrise or sunset.
 - Rock Climbing Opportunities: The rock cliffs in the area are known to attract rock climbers, adding an adventurous dimension to the locale.
 - Strenuous but Rewarding Hike: The section of the SHT leading to the camp is notably strenuous, involving ascents over rocky trails. As one reviewer noted, this effort makes the eventual arrival and the spectacular views all the more satisfying.
 - Ample Camping Space: The site typically features "plenty of spots" with multiple tent pads, including a main and overflow area, which helps accommodate backpackers, though sharing is always expected.
 - Wilderness Immersion: Located deep in the backcountry, the camp offers an unparalleled opportunity for solitude, stargazing, and connecting with nature far from road noise and crowds.
 - Proximity to Finland State Forest: The camp is located within the greater recreation area of the Finland State Forest, placing it near other popular spots like Tettegouche State Park and George Crosby Manitou State Park.

Customer Reviews
Decently strenuous hike once you reach the mountain but well worth the awesome views, highly recommend. Great spot for watching the sun rise/ fall or rock climbing. Plenty of spots at the main campsite and also the overflow.
Had hiked 16.5 miles southbound to this site and was happy to finally get there. I had wanted to take pics of the sunset but was too exhausted and thought I had to travel back to another peak so didn't. Woke up early the next morning and as we continued south found the other "campsite" and another peak which wasn't far from the main campsite. I think there are more spots to camp then what is in the book. Now I know for next time. I did get to see the sunrise so I was happy about that. No water source as others have mentioned but I didn't need it.
Beautiful location. No water nearby so be prepared to haul in an extra liter or two.
Don't bother coming here. Views aren't even cool. Not worth the hike.
The hike is worth the effort!
