Section 29 Lake Campground Introduce
For the budget-conscious and nature-loving Minnesota resident, finding a truly rustic, quiet, and—perhaps most importantly—fee-free campsite is a significant discovery. The Section 29 Lake Campground, nestled deep within the vast Superior National Forest near Isabella, offers exactly this experience. This is not a sprawling, amenity-heavy destination; it is a small, quiet, four-site rustic campground designed for those who prioritize tranquility and the natural environment over modern conveniences. Its name, derived from its location in section 29 of a township, belies the beauty of the setting: a peaceful lakeside camp surrounded by the dense, mixed woods characteristic of Minnesota's North Shore region.
The campground provides an essential escape for campers seeking solitude. As noted by customers, it is a place where you can enjoy the relaxing sounds of the Minnesota loons and witness truly pretty sunsets reflecting on the water. It offers a taste of the wilderness without requiring a full Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness (BWCAW) permit and deep backcountry travel, making it an accessible option for many different types of campers, including families and those traveling with small RVs or travel trailers. However, visitors should be aware that the northeast portion of Section 29 Lake was impacted by the 2011 Pagami Creek Fire, and while the campground itself is fully operational, exercising caution when exploring the shore in the burned area is advisable. This site embodies the rugged, self-sufficient spirit of the North Shore camping tradition.
Section 29 Lake Campground is a quintessential Superior National Forest location, situated near the small community of Isabella, Minnesota. The official address is: Isabella, MN 55607, USA. This places the campground deep in the forest, typically accessed via a network of maintained, though often gravel, Forest Roads (FRs).
Access requires careful navigation, but the general drive time makes it a feasible weekend getaway for residents: approximately 1 hour 55 minutes from Duluth, and around 4 hours from the Twin Cities metro area. Detailed directions from Isabella involve turning onto FR 172 (Wanless Rd), then left onto FR 369 (Trappers Lake Rd), followed by another left onto FR 366. It is crucial for visitors to follow U.S. Forest Service directions closely and be prepared for travel on unpaved roads. The remote location ensures peace and quiet but means services, including cell phone reception (which is generally not guaranteed), are sparse. The campground is also an excellent basecamp for exploring other nearby rustic lakes and trails, offering a jumping-off point for broader forest exploration.
The term "Rustic Campground" accurately defines the facilities at Section 29 Lake. The emphasis is on the natural setting, meaning amenities are simple and functional, promoting a minimalist, low-impact camping style.
The available services include:
- Four Campsites: A very small, intimate campground setting, available on a first-come, first-served basis (no reservations possible).
 - Vault Toilets: Simple, permanent outhouse facilities for waste disposal.
 - Picnic Tables: A fixed wooden table is provided at each of the four designated sites.
 - Campfire Rings/Grates: Designated metal fire rings with cooking grates for contained campfires (adhere to all fire restrictions).
 - Drive-Down Boat Ramp: A primitive access point for launching small watercraft (canoes, kayaks, small fishing boats) onto Section 29 Lake.
 - Vehicle and RV Parking: Sites are capable of accommodating travel trailers and smaller RVs, with at least three sites noted as capable of handling vehicles in the 26–28 foot range.

Crucial Note: There are no fees required for this site, but there is also no potable (drinking) water, no garbage service (must pack out all trash), and no electrical hookups or showers. Campers must bring all necessary drinking water or be prepared to treat water sourced from the lake.
Section 29 Lake Campground stands out due to its specific blend of accessibility and rustic authenticity, making it a local favorite for those in the know:
- Zero Fee Camping: As a free-use rustic site within the Superior National Forest, it offers exceptional value for money—or lack thereof—a significant draw for Minnesota residents.
 - Loon Serenity: Highly praised in customer reviews for the beautiful and tranquil sounds of the Minnesota loons, providing a quintessential Northwoods soundscape.
 - RV/Trailer Friendly (Small): The ability to accommodate travel trailers up to approximately 28 feet (in select sites) provides a major advantage for those seeking a rustic experience without being limited to tent-only camping.
 - Prime Sunset Views: The orientation of the lake and campsite is noted for providing very pretty sunsets, enhancing the overall peaceful atmosphere.
 - Fishing Potential (Walleye/Pike): Historically, the lake is known to contain Walleye and Northern Pike, though recent customer experiences suggest that visitors should check the latest Minnesota DNR reports regarding potential winterkill (turnover) that may affect current fish populations.
 - Low Crowd Density: With only four sites, the campground naturally limits crowds, ensuring a high degree of privacy and quiet solitude.

As a rustic, fee-free site, Section 29 Lake Campground does not have a dedicated on-site host or direct phone number. All inquiries, especially concerning road conditions, fire restrictions, and forest alerts, should be directed to the responsible management office.
- Address: Isabella, MN 55607, USA (General Forest Area)
 - Managing Office: Tofte Ranger District, Superior National Forest
 - Tofte Ranger District Phone (General Inquiries): (218) 663-8060 (Recommended for up-to-date regional information)
 - Forest Supervisor's Office Phone (Duluth): (218) 626-4300

Section 29 Lake Campground is worth choosing for the discerning Minnesota camper who believes that the best things in life—and in camping—are often free and uncrowded. It represents the purity of the Superior National Forest experience without the bureaucratic hassle or fees associated with more developed areas.
Its unique value lies in the exceptional combination of tranquility and accessibility. Where else can you pull a modest travel trailer into a designated site right on the water, listen to the loons call, and not have to pay a single dollar? This makes it an invaluable resource for frequent campers and for those who appreciate the self-sufficiency that comes with minimal amenities. While the fishing may have current challenges due to environmental factors like winterkill, the lake itself remains a spectacular place for paddling, quiet contemplation, and enjoying the magnificent beauty of the Northwoods. It is the perfect spot for Minnesotans looking to genuinely disconnect, explore the remote gravel roads of the Forest Service, and spend quality time immersed in nature, proving that an unforgettable camping trip does not require a reservation or a fee.

Beautiful lake & no fee campground! I really enjoyed the tranquility here and the relaxing sounds of the MN loons. The sunset was very pretty! Mom and I really enjoyed staying here and can't wait to come back in the fall 🙂🏕️
4 camping sites with 3 of them capable of parking a travel trailer in. I squeazed a 28' travel trailer in #3 and my bro-in-law parked his 26' travel trailer in #2. #1 would accept an RV as well. Very peaceful lake with a pair of loons on it. We were there the fist two week on June 2024 and the lake appeared to not have any fish in it. Articles from 2023 claimed winterkill (turnover).
Before the bugs start and after they're gone you won't find too many USFS campgrounds that have the same quiet peaceful feel. No more than 4 sites and 2 are on the lake.
Remote small campground northwest of Finland Minnesota. 4 campsites, an outhouse. No facilities. Access to the small lake, lots of wildlife. Moose, bear, wolves, Canadian lynx are some we have seen in area.
I have been on a lot of camping trips but this is the best one By far
