Well worth the hike if you're overnighting at 4c2 or 4c3. This would be a brutal day hike though. But I did see plenty of people doing that. Just a note, we stayed at 4c3 and you do have to cross water to get to camp. Unreal fishing though!
Definitely a tough trail. Went the first week of June. Deep snow, water, storms, a steep decent/accent but a ton of fun. Thought my heart might explode on the way back up because it is pretty strenuous and I am out of shape.
Be careful on the way up..... And the way down
Don't over pack for day trips. Camp if possible. Not for faint at heart. Scree trail down into canyon very slick.
Walking on the volcano is pretty cool but very hot.
