Located in Improvement District No. 9, Alberta, this campground is surrounded by breathtaking landscapes, making it an ideal spot for those seeking a peaceful retreat in nature.
The campground features five sites, ensuring a quiet and intimate setting for campers. While the facilities are basic, the natural beauty of the area more than compensates. However, it's important to note that the campground is situated approximately 100 meters downwind from the Shadow Lake Lodge, which may affect your experience due to occasional smoke and food odors.
Key features of Shadow Lake Backcountry Campground Re14 include:
- Proximity to Shadow Lake, which is just 1 kilometer away
- A large communal cooking and food storage area with one table
- No grey water disposal facilities, so campers must plan accordingly
Customer feedback highlights both the serene environment and some challenges. Many appreciate the quiet and secluded nature of the campground, but some have noted issues with noise from the nearby lodge's generator and smoke from their incinerator. These factors may impact your stay, so it's advisable to consider these points when planning your trip.
For those seeking a more pristine backcountry experience, nearby alternatives such as Twin Lakes, Pharaoh Creek, or Ball Pass may be worth exploring. Regardless, Shadow Lake Backcountry Campground Re14 remains a picturesque spot for those looking to immerse themselves in the natural beauty of Banff National Park.

Customer Reviews
One of the worst experiences at a Parks Canada “backcountry” campsite (and we have stayed at a lot of them). While we were staying at the Shadow Lake campsite (2 nights after Twin Lakes) and the Shadow Lake Lodge (now operated by the Alpine Club of Canada) ran their generator at totally inappropriate times (2230-0230 & 0630 - 1000). Totally inconsiderate! When we complained, we were given the excuse that the engineering firm the ACC contracts, controls the generator “remotely” (yeah right). Also, they burned all their garbage in an incinerator! Who burns garbage these days , especially in the remote backcountry?! Of course this was done consistently at inappropriate times with the smoke wafting into the campsite!! It was gross and again totally inconsiderate of all the other backcountry users! From my research, this is totally against the ACC core values (as listed on their website) and Banff Parks mandate 😡 Be warned!! If you don’t have to stay at this campsite, don’t!! Move on to Twin Lakes, Pharaoh Creek, or Ball Pass! If you do, make sure you complain to the ACC and Banff Park Superintendent!!
Campground is 100m downwind from the Shadow Lake Lodge grill/bbq. Great for the wafting smell, less so for not wanting to smell like a tasty treat for a bear. Cooking/food storage area is quite a walk, and only one table (although it's a big one). No grey water disposal. The actual lake is another 1km from this campground. Nice and quiet with only 5 sites, but there are better gems in Banff/Yoho.
Well established Backcountry Camp Site with Separate Eating Area, adjacent to Shadow Lake Lodge.
