Shawnee Mission Park Campsite & Youth Camp 1 Introduce

Shawnee Mission Park Campsite & Youth Camp 1 is a distinctive offering within the Campgrounds & RV Parks category, specifically designed to cater to organized not-for-profit youth groups. Located within the sprawling 1,600-acre Shawnee Mission Park in Shawnee, Kansas, this facility provides a dedicated space for groups like Scouts, American Heritage Girls, Girl Scouts, and religious youth groups to experience outdoor camping and connect with nature in a well-managed park setting. Unlike typical individual campsites, Shawnee Mission Park Campsite & Youth Camp 1 focuses on communal experiences and the unique needs of educational and recreational youth programs.

The environment of Shawnee Mission Park Campsite & Youth Camp 1 is nestled within the larger Shawnee Mission Park, which is known for its diverse landscapes and impressive amenities. While the specific campsite itself offers a natural, wooded setting, campers benefit immensely from their immediate proximity to the park's extensive features. The park boasts a beautiful 120-acre lake, providing a central aquatic hub. The campsite itself is characterized by its natural surroundings, offering a sense of seclusion within a large urban park. Expect mature trees that provide shade and a natural canopy, contributing to a genuine outdoor camping atmosphere. The overall park environment includes open green spaces, wooded areas, and paved and nature trails. The presence of the lake means access to a clean and well-maintained aquatic environment, perfect for various water activities. While urban amenities are within a short drive, the design of the campsite aims to immerse campers in a more rustic, natural setting, fostering an appreciation for the outdoors.

As a specialized facility within the Campgrounds & RV Parks category, Shawnee Mission Park Campsite & Youth Camp 1 offers services tailored to its target audience: organized youth groups. The site is a designated "pod" or group camping area, designed to accommodate a maximum of 25 campers per site/pod. This makes it ideal for smaller troops or youth organizations looking for a dedicated space. Each site is equipped with essential camping amenities, which typically include picnic tables and a fire pit, allowing for traditional campfire activities and outdoor cooking. It's important to note that the campsite is primitive in terms of utilities; specifically, there is no electricity or water available directly at Campsite 1. Portable restrooms are located nearby (approximately half a mile from Site 1 and a quarter mile from Site 2). Campers must bring their own firewood, as it is not provided, and the destruction of park vegetation is strictly prohibited. Access to the campground requires a key, which must be picked up from Visitor Services at Shawnee Mission Park during business hours (Monday-Friday, 8:30 a.m. - 5 p.m.). This controlled access ensures security and maintains the integrity of the youth camping experience. While the campground itself does not offer full hookups for RVs, its purpose is geared towards tent camping and the unique needs of youth groups.

The features of Shawnee Mission Park Campsite & Youth Camp 1 are significantly enhanced by its location within the broader Shawnee Mission Park. Campers have access to a multitude of recreational opportunities within the park. The 120-acre lake is a major attraction, popular for boating (motorized and non-motorized), fishing, sailing, and paddleboarding. The Shawnee Mission Park Marina offers boat rentals, including canoes, pedal boats, and fishing boats, providing easy access to the water. The lake is stocked with various fish species, including channel catfish, large and smallmouth bass, wipers, and crappie, with rainbow trout also released seasonally, making it an excellent spot for youth fishing activities (Kansas State fishing licenses and JCPRD boat permits are required). Beyond the lake, the park features an extensive network of nature trails and paved trails, ideal for hiking, mountain biking, and exploring the diverse habitats. There's also an 18-hole disc golf course, an archery range (with specific rules regarding broadhead points and crossbows), and a 53-acre off-leash dog area (though youth campers would likely not be utilizing this directly). The park also hosts "The Theatre in the Park" during warmer months, offering opportunities for cultural enrichment. The presence of multiple picnic areas and 11 spacious shelters within the park provides additional options for group gatherings and activities. Youth camps within the park often incorporate educational components, such as nature discovery programs, focusing on topics like animal identification, creek ecology, and map and compass skills, promoting environmental awareness and outdoor skills. Some youth camps in the broader Shawnee Mission area also incorporate swimming and field trips into their programs, though direct access to a pool at Campsite 1 is not a guaranteed feature.

For promotional information, Johnson County Park and Recreation District (JCPRD), which manages Shawnee Mission Park, highlights the campground as a valuable resource for organized youth groups. Reservations for Shawnee Mission Park Campsite & Youth Camp 1 are exclusively available for not-for-profit youth organizations and require adult chaperones on-site, emphasizing its specialized purpose. The cost for the Shawnee Mission Park campground (Campsite 1) is $25 per pod, per night for Johnson County residents, and $35 for non-residents. Fees are non-refundable. Reservations are for a 24-hour period, from 12:00 p.m. to 12:00 p.m. the following day, and can be made by filling out a Campground Request Form. It is crucial to remember that keys for the campground reservation must be picked up in person at Visitor Services during their operating hours, and drop-off is in a secure mailbox after the stay. The park gates close at night, and the key is necessary for after-hours access for emergencies. Promotional materials often emphasize the safety and structured environment provided for youth groups, along with the educational and recreational opportunities available throughout the park. The JCPRD website serves as the primary source for detailed information, including maps, facility details, and reservation procedures. Groups are encouraged to plan their visit well in advance, especially during popular seasons, to secure their desired dates. The overall message is that Shawnee Mission Park Campsite & Youth Camp 1 offers a convenient, accessible, and enriching outdoor experience for youth organizations looking to foster teamwork, independence, and an appreciation for nature within a well-maintained urban park setting.

Campsite #1 was absolutely INFESTED with ticks. I mean the actual campsite where the fire pit is, inside the tree line. We cancelled our camping trip, so if you're planning to camp here be very careful. About half of our group got bit by ticks.
