It’s a unique gem designed specifically for equestrians, offering the rare convenience of corrals right at your campsite, combined with extensive, well-maintained trails. But even if you don't bring a horse, its tranquil, rustic charm and beautiful riverside setting make it an appealing spot for any Minnesotan seeking a quiet, natural escape. This article will help you discover why Shell City Horse Camp "rocks" and why it should be on your list for your next outdoor adventure.
Shell City Horse Camp is a dedicated equestrian campground, providing a "perfect" blend of basic amenities and a truly immersive natural experience for horse and rider. Unlike many traditional campgrounds, its design specifically caters to the needs of equestrians, offering "corrals at each campsite," which is a significant convenience for horse owners. Visitors consistently praise the "lovely, roofed and gated stalls" and various outdoor corrals available, ensuring comfortable accommodation for horses of different sizes. Beyond its equestrian focus, the campground itself is noted for being "super quiet," providing a peaceful backdrop of nature's sounds, far removed from urban clamor. It's considered "primitive," designed to furnish only the basic needs of the camper, which contributes to its "very private" atmosphere. This commitment to a rustic experience, combined with its specialized horse facilities, makes Shell City Horse Camp a unique and highly valued resource for Minnesota’s equestrian community and anyone else seeking an authentic, tranquil outdoor adventure.
Shell City Horse Camp is located in Huntersville State Forest near Menahga, MN 56464, USA. Its address places it within a vast expanse of Minnesota's natural landscape, offering a genuine sense of being "off the beaten path" without being overly difficult to reach. Directions typically involve taking Stocking Lake Rd. from Menahga, then turning onto Co. Rd. 23, and finally onto 380th St. and 199th Ave. While the final approach is on a gravel/dirt road, it is generally considered "not a bad drive." This accessibility makes it a practical destination for Minnesotans from various regions, though a vehicle with good clearance might be appreciated, especially in less ideal weather conditions. Its location within Huntersville State Forest means campers are surrounded by dense forests and rolling hills, with easy access to the area's extensive trail system and the beautiful Shell River, enhancing the overall outdoor experience.
Shell City Horse Camp offers basic, yet highly functional, amenities that cater specifically to the needs of both campers and their horses, emphasizing a rustic and self-sufficient experience.
Campsites with Corrals: A standout feature, each of the 27 horse sites comes equipped with "corrals at each campsite." There are "3 lovely, roofed and gated stalls (about 12x12 with dirt floors)" and "5 outdoor corrals that range in size from ~10x10 to maybe 20x20." Additionally, there are "3 lines for tying."
Traditional Campsites: In addition to the horse sites, there are eight "rustic sites that are perfect for everyone else," providing options for non-equestrian campers.
Vault Toilets: The campground features a "not so smelly single seat vault toilet," providing a basic and generally clean restroom facility for campers.
Hand Water Pump: "A hand water pump" is available for drinking water. However, reviewers note that the water from the pump at the horse camp "takes more effort and the water comes out yellow." It is recommended to "bring your own drinking water or get it from the pump at the traditional campground next door" if available, as that water "tasted fine."
Picnic Tables and Fire Rings: All campsites include "picnic tables and fire rings" for cooking and campfires.
Ample Parking: There is "plenty of room to park and turn our 32 ft trailer," indicating sufficient space for larger trailers and RVs, even though there are no hookups.
First-Come, First-Served: All sites are available on a "first come, first served basis for a fee," requiring payment on site. This means early arrival is advisable during peak seasons.
No Hookups: The campground is considered "primitive" and "does not have hook ups" for electricity, water, or sewer. Campers should be prepared for a self-sufficient stay.

These trails are described as "lovely, sandy, well-marked, and mostly shady," providing excellent riding opportunities. Horses also "loved wading in the clear, Sandy river."
Secluded and Private Sites: Visitors consistently praise the "very private" and "secluded campsites," offering a quiet and peaceful environment away from the hustle and bustle of more populated areas. This creates an ideal setting for relaxation.
Beautiful River Access: The "river is beautiful," and the opportunity for horses to wade in the "clear, sandy river" is a unique and enjoyable feature. There is "lake/river access (boat ramp)" for general use as well.

Bring your own drinking water or get it from the pump at the traditional campground next door. The pump at horse camp takes more effort and the water comes out yellow. Other than that, it's perfect here! Just the basic amenities and it's so nice having corrals at each campsite. The river is beautiful and the trails are very fun!
We arrived at about 7 pm on a Tuesday and found we had the whole place to ourselves. Lovely, roofed and gated stalls about 12x12 with dirt floors. There are 3 of those and 5 outdoor corrals that range in size from ~10x10 to maybe 20x20. There are about 3 lines for tying. A nice mounting block with hand rails. Super quiet. Picnic tables and fire rings. A not so smelly single seat vault toilet. A hand water pump. Plenty of room to park and turn our 32 ft trailer. Trails were lovely, sandy, well-marked, and mostly shady. Horses loved wading in the clear, Sandy river. Shell City Horse campground rocks!
Beautiful single track, two track, and forestry roads wind through the woods and along the river.. Nice access to shallow river crossing. Plenty of space to camp with wood corral and high tie options.
Was a nice, wooded campground, however the campers tend to spend all night partying, not ideal for a family trip!
One of my most favorite places to ride . And you can tube on the river when it gets to hot.
