Whether you're looking for a peaceful fishing trip, a family beach vacation, or a base for exploring the region's ATV trails, Shell Lake Municipal Campground provides a versatile and welcoming environment.
The environment of Shell Lake Municipal Campground is a significant draw, defined by its direct proximity to the stunning 2,580-acre Shell Lake. This lake is notable as the largest landlocked seepage lake in Wisconsin, boasting remarkably clear and clean waters. The campground is strategically situated with some of its 47 sites directly on the lakefront, offering campers picturesque views and immediate access to the water. The surrounding area is characterized by typical northern Wisconsin landscape, featuring a mix of mature trees that provide natural shade to many campsites, contributing to a comfortable and serene atmosphere. Despite being a municipal campground, it maintains a sense of natural beauty, with well-maintained grounds that blend seamlessly with the lakeside setting. The town of Shell Lake itself is a friendly rural community nestled in the heart of this Northwoods region, offering a quiet charm that complements the outdoor experience. Campers can enjoy breathtaking sunrises and sunsets over the lake, listen to the sounds of nature, and breathe in the fresh, clean air that defines this beautiful corner of Wisconsin.
The services offered at Shell Lake Municipal Campground are designed to provide a comfortable and convenient stay for a wide range of campers, from tent users to large RVs. A significant advantage is that all 47 campsites come equipped with both water and electric hookups, a premium feature not always found in municipal campgrounds. Furthermore, sites #1 through #38 also include sewer hookups, offering full hookup convenience for many RV campers. The campground provides clean and hot showers, ensuring a refreshing experience after a day of outdoor activities. An RV dump station is available on-site for guests' convenience. Each campsite typically includes a picnic table and a fire ring, perfect for outdoor dining and evening campfires under the stars. For those with boats, a boat dock is available for daily rentals exclusively for campground patrons, making it easy to get out on the lake. There is also a public swim beach and a public boat launch nearby, accessible for a nominal daily or yearly fee. Anglers will appreciate the dedicated fish cleaning station, providing a convenient space to prepare their catch. While there isn't a dedicated camp store on-site, the campground's proximity to downtown Shell Lake means that groceries, supplies, and other necessities are just a short walk or drive away. The City of Shell Lake is committed to providing accessible facilities, and the campground strives to accommodate diverse needs.
The features of Shell Lake Municipal Campground extend beyond basic amenities, focusing on recreational opportunities and community engagement. The primary feature is undoubtedly Shell Lake itself, which offers excellent opportunities for fishing (known for walleyes, muskies, and panfish), sailing, and swimming in its crystal-clear waters. The public swim beach is a major attraction, particularly for families. For those who enjoy motorized recreation, it's important to note that a distinct Shell Lake ATV Campground, located nearby on the north end of the lake, is directly connected to the regional ATV trail system, offering full hookups and an ATV wash station. While not part of the municipal campground directly, its proximity means ATV enthusiasts staying at the Municipal Campground can still access these trails within a short distance. Beyond water activities, the town of Shell Lake offers a variety of attractions within walking distance or a short drive. These include the Shell Lake Arts Center, which hosts numerous concerts and workshops, and the Shell Lake Arts Center Pavilion, a lakeside venue perfect for outdoor concerts and events. The Potter's Shed, an art gallery and cafe, provides a unique cultural experience. The Washburn County Historical Museum offers a glimpse into local history. For sports enthusiasts, the Butternut Golf Course is nearby. The campground's location allows easy access to downtown Shell Lake, where visitors can find dining options, unique shops, and a friendly small-town atmosphere. The community often hosts local events and festivals, particularly during the summer months, adding to the vibrancy of a stay at the municipal campground.

Customer Reviews
Really happy we chose this location!! Well maintained, safe, beautiful spot! Lots of areas to go on a walk, the beach is outstanding and the playground is very nice! Also, dog friendly!
We are return campers. Office staff always pleasant and helpful. Lots to do in and around Shell lake. They have four rows of camping in this city campground first three rows are full hook up beginning at Lakefront working their way back. Fourth row and back which is closest to Main Street and the parking lot is only water and electric, The rest are full hook up. There is a large, nice sandy beach, fishing pier, boat launch. Prices are good. The one bad thing with the back 2 rows, there are pine trees which drop sap onto your vehicles. Also there are a lot of kids running thru sites and riding bikes in circles without parents paying attention. And lots of dogs which I love but many people do not put them on leashes which presents a problem when you have your dog on a leash. The three times we have been here we have always found it fairly windy. But that’s what happens when your by the lake I suppose. We probably will return here again at some point. However the reservation system is pretty competitive as its favorite for many. There are also seasonal summer people who get a lot of the good sites the lakefront.
Very nice, big beach, clear water, shaded playground, and lots of shops next door. Also great for fishing , and if u get a water view you won't regret it.
Really nice municipal campground, right on the shore of Shell Lake. Boat ramp immediately adjacent, for those fishing-inclined. Only issue is a bit pricey compared to most municipal options ($50)
Absolutely stunning beach lake and play area, perfect for kids with lots of shade for adults to sit and watch
