Shell Mound Campground Introduce

Welcome to Shell Mound Campground, a part of the Campgrounds & RV Parks category, located at 17650 SW 78 Pl, Cedar Key, FL 32625. You can reach us at (352) 221-4466 or +1 352-221-4466.

The environment at Shell Mound Campground offers a natural setting with trees providing shade for the campsites. The campground features a small public boat ramp and a cleaning station for your convenience. There is also a short hiking trail that loops around the shell mound, offering opportunities to explore the woodsy surroundings, water views, and local wildlife. The campground is conveniently located close to the town of Cedar Key.

In terms of services and features, the campground offers fairly level campsites that are easy to enter and exit, accommodating various camping setups, including campervans like a Winnebago. A dump station is available, though maneuvering may require some caution and potentially a spotter. The bathroom facilities include clean men's restrooms. However, the women's bathhouse is noted to need serious upgrading and may be dirty, with limited space for clothes during showering and no locks on the single shower or two toilets. Currently, electricity is unavailable due to hurricane damage, and the boardwalks are damaged and closed.

The price for camping is $25 per night, and payment is cash only. The host and manager, Dave, is reported to be very nice and accommodating. While some visitors have expressed concerns about the women's bathhouse, the campground is generally considered quiet at night and offers a sense of safety. Many would consider staying again if in the area, particularly those who may not need to rely on the bathhouse facilities.

Shell Mound Campground provides a budget-friendly ($25/night, cash only) option for those looking to camp in the Cedar Key area, with the benefit of a boat ramp, cleaning station, and access to a unique shell mound hiking trail. While there are current limitations due to hurricane damage (no electricity, closed boardwalks) and noted issues with the women's bathhouse, the shaded campsites, easy access, and proximity to nature and Cedar Key make it a potentially attractive option for visitors prioritizing the outdoor environment and basic amenities.

Camp sites are fairly good, more level than others. Trees for shade. Easy in and easy out. Dump station a but hard to maneuver but with two folks (one spotting) should be ok. We were in a Winnebago campervan. Dave, the host and manager is very nice and accommodating. The women's bathhouse area needs serious upgrading. It is also dirty. The only place to put clothes when showering is over the door or outside the shower. No locks on the one shower nor the two toilets. Price is right. Cash only, $25. We stayed for two nights and would frequent again if in the area, but not use the bathhouse., which might be problematic for us, like this time. Also, a small public boat ramp in the campground. Nice area. There is a very nice small hike in the shell Mound area. Woodsy all around with water, and wildlife. Close enough to the town of Cedar Key. Quiet at night and felt safe.

Lovely place in the middle of nowhere with lovely people. I spent new years here and it was very peaceful. It's so nice to see nature without all the mess of society. The shell mounds had a very spooky feeling and the photos I took left strange white streaks. It was only when I was inside the ring.

I’ve reviewed this place before and I’ll say it again - I love this campground and stay here whenever I’m in the area. It’s not fancy. It’s just the basics. But it’s way, way out there, with spectacular birding and fishing available. Plus some pretty cool hiking trails. And the history associated with the shell mound is cool, too. Warning - be prepared to deal with bugs, in a major way!

Great campground, clean, friendly staff... It's first come, first serve, NO reservations accepted... Close to Shell Mound Trail & Archaeological Site, and the Observation Deck. Two boat ramps to put in your boat or kayak... Lots of great spots to take pix of sunrises, sunsets & wildlife... Max stay is 7 days...

Small campground. Sites with and without water. Currently no electricity on any sites due to Helene. Bathrooms are simple but clean. Hot shower was awesome! Boat launch available. Out in the boonies. Very quiet. Gail at the front desk was helpful and friendly.

We found this spot by a happy little mistake. We were looking for a spot to watch the sunset but ended up here. And what a sweet spot it was. If you’re standing at the boat ramp, looking into the water, there is a little beaten path to the left of the ramp. Walk the path…all.the.way.to.where.it.ends. If you’re lucky like us, you’ll have a private little area to take phenomenal photos, watch a stunning sunset and snuggle under the cotton candy sky. I had preplanned and brought a blanket and bug spray. I suggest the same 🥴. Just use common sense and be aware of your surroundings. This is still nature so be cautious of snakes, water creatures and other typical Florida hazards.
