Sheriff Reservoir Campground Introduce
Sheriff Reservoir Campground, situated approximately 15 miles west of Yampa, Colorado, offers a wonderfully rustic and immersive camping experience within the vast Medicine Bow-Routt National Forests & Thunder Basin National Grassland. Operating under the "Campgrounds & RV Parks" category, this site caters primarily to those seeking a more traditional and unadorned outdoor adventure, particularly tent campers, though some sites can accommodate trailers and RVs. It's a destination that promises tranquility, natural beauty, and direct access to a wealth of outdoor activities, making it a true gem for local users and visitors alike.
The environment at Sheriff Reservoir Campground is characterized by a tightly forested loop, primarily with medium-sized trees, which provides a sense of seclusion and natural immersion. While direct views of the reservoir and the majestic Flat Tops are limited from most individual campsites, the picturesque scenery is just a few steps outside the campground loop. The campground sits at an elevation of approximately 9,700 feet, contributing to its refreshing mountain air and distinct high-country feel. The presence of Sheriff Reservoir itself is a significant environmental feature, a tranquil body of water that enhances the scenic appeal and recreational opportunities of the area.
Due to its forested setting and proximity to water, campers should be prepared for insects, particularly mosquitos, which can be exceptionally thick, especially during the warmer months. Packing a variety of insect repellents is highly recommended to ensure a comfortable stay. The surrounding landscape transitions from dense forest to large open meadows, particularly along the nearby hiking trails, offering diverse habitats and opportunities for wildlife viewing. The area is renowned for its excellent lake and stream fishing, indicating a healthy aquatic ecosystem that supports various trout species, including Rainbow, Colorado River Cutthroat, and Brook Trout.
The seasonal nature of the campground's accessibility is also a key environmental consideration. It typically opens mid to late June and remains accessible through late September or early October, depending on snow conditions at this higher elevation. This narrow window ensures that visitors experience the best of the summer and early fall mountain environment, when trails are clear, and the weather is generally favorable for outdoor pursuits.
Sheriff Reservoir Campground falls into a more primitive category of "Campgrounds & RV Parks," offering essential, rather than extensive, services. It features 5 to 6 individual campsites, each equipped with a picnic table and a firegrate, providing the basic necessities for cooking and gathering. A crucial aspect of camping at Sheriff Reservoir is the absence of potable water. Campers must come prepared to pack in all of their own drinking and cooking water, a detail that underscores the campground's rustic nature and encourages self-sufficiency.
For sanitation, the campground provides vault toilets, which are maintained but do not offer flush facilities. There are no hookups for RVs, meaning campers with recreational vehicles will need to be self-contained. However, for those with campers and trailers, there are ample dispersed camping opportunities along the 4-mile stretch of forest service road leading into the campground, which might be better suited for larger setups, with some dispersed sites even being "big rig friendly" (though some may require high-clearance vehicles).
The campground operates on a first-come, first-served basis, meaning no reservations are accepted. This allows for spontaneous adventures but also advises early arrival, especially during peak season, to secure a site. A fee of $14 per site is required, payable by exact cash or check only, as there is no option for change back. Payment instructions are clearly displayed on a kiosk at the campground entrance. Dogs are permitted within the campground but must be kept on a leash at all times, reflecting a general rule in forest service campgrounds to protect wildlife and ensure the safety and enjoyment of all visitors.
The defining feature of Sheriff Reservoir Campground is its prime location as a gateway to the vast Flat Tops Wilderness Area and the recreational opportunities centered around Sheriff Reservoir itself. Although the campground is small, its intimacy fosters a peaceful atmosphere. Its tightly forested loop is best suited for tent camping, offering a quintessential backcountry experience.
The reservoir is the focal point for many activities. While the campground sites don't offer direct lakeside camping, the shore and dam are easily accessible by foot or car from the campground. This makes it an ideal spot for non-motorized boating activities such as canoeing, kayaking, paddleboarding, and using belly boats. It's also a renowned fishing destination, with the reservoir and surrounding streams offering excellent trout fishing opportunities. Anglers can enjoy casting from the shore or from their non-motorized vessels.
Beyond the reservoir, the area is a hiker's paradise. Several trails begin nearby, including the Sand Creek Trail #1123, Bunker Basin Trail #1109, and Black Mountain Creek Trail #1117. These trails lead into diverse landscapes, from open meadows and aspen stands to challenging climbs into the Flat Tops Wilderness, offering stunning views and opportunities for backpacking. The Black Mountain Creek Trail, for instance, provides access to the Baldy Trail No. 1200 and the East Fork Trail No. 1119, with the highest point on the trail reaching 11,125 feet within the Wilderness. These trails serve as major access portals into the Flat Tops, providing a rich network for exploration.
During big game season, the area is also popular among hunters, adding another dimension to the recreational offerings. Wildlife viewing is generally good in the area, with opportunities to spot various species inhabiting the diverse ecosystems.
For those seeking a genuine escape from the hustle and bustle of modern life, Sheriff Reservoir Campground offers an unparalleled opportunity to unplug and reconnect with nature. Imagine crisp mountain air, the scent of pine, and the quiet beauty of a high-elevation lake. This campground is not about luxurious amenities, but about the purity of the outdoor experience.
Planning your visit is key. As it's a first-come, first-served campground, arriving early, especially on weekends or during the peak summer months (mid-June to September), is highly advisable to secure one of the limited sites. Remember to bring all necessary water, as none is available on-site. Prepare for fluctuating mountain weather and bring appropriate gear for cool evenings, even in summer, and plenty of insect repellent.
This destination is perfect for anglers, hikers, and anyone who appreciates primitive camping in a stunning natural setting. The surrounding Medicine Bow-Routt National Forests offer countless adventures, from exploring the Flat Tops Wilderness to simply enjoying the peace and quiet of the forest. Whether you're casting a line, traversing scenic trails, or simply relaxing by a campfire, Sheriff Reservoir Campground provides the ideal backdrop for a memorable outdoor adventure. Embrace the simplicity, revel in the natural beauty, and create lasting memories at this secluded Colorado gem.

Have done day and camping trips here for 10 years. Always catch rainbows from shore or a canoe. Currently (early September), the reservoir is really low (down 40-50 ft?) from June - not as pretty, but still catch our fish limit. A nice day trip is to hike from the reservoir to Sand and Crater Lakes on a
Just some notes I pulled from the Forest service and aerial photos. There is a vault toilet but no drinking water. The spaces look well defined and they come with fire rings but not cooking grates. Smaller trailers can fit in here but be mindful the sites are back-in only and not pullthru. The sites are almost all shaded . The campground does not have lakeside sites but it is only a short walk from the campground to the lake.
Beautiful place to visit even if it's 15 degrees below zero Fahrenheit.
