The first thing we noticed when we walked into the cabin was the smell. The smell of a wood fire in an authentic log cabin with a fantastic view of the lake and mountains, perfect. Man am I glad we got this place for the eclipse. PROS: Besides the above, two great places for food and good beer within walking distance and ice cream, too. Only ten minutes from Saranac Lake or Lake Placid, only 30 minutes from Tupper Lake or Whiteface Mt. CONS: Really only one for us, the bed was really hard. It's nice to know we now have more options in the ADK when we're on a bike trip! Thanks Larry, great place to see a sunrise from bed.
After a long-overdue getaway, my family decided to escape Covid captivity and go to our favorite destination of Lake Placid. We booked the #26 cabin at Sherwood, hoping that our stay would be similar to what we've experienced in the past. Rustic, simple, quiet, and relaxing. It might have been, were it not for the fact that our cabin looked like it hasn't been cleaned in centuries. We entered the cabin and immediately noticed the very dirty (and sticky, as I was soon able to discover) refrigerator. There were bugs in the kitchen sink, cobwebs in multiple areas of the cabin, dust, dirty bathroom with pieces of paper in the shower stall (!), etc. Two twin beds proved too small for our family of 4 and my husband had to sleep on the pull-out couch. Deciding to sleep on it was definitely a risky experience, as we found so much dust underneath. There was a musty smell in the cabin and it was a must to open all the windows - windows and windowsills have never likely been cleaned, either. The view of the lake from the cabin was beautiful and it would have been so wonderful to be able to relax and soak in the beauty of the Adirondacks, if only the owners kept the cabin clean. The straw that broke the camel's back were my little son's bites, which the owner contributed to mosquitoes (blamed it on open windows). We used mosquito repellent, the bites appeared when we returned home and looked to be in a line pattern, as bed bug bites do. Upon contacting the owner, he categorically denied there was any problem with the cabin, and offered no apology whatsoever. Hopefully, this was the only cabin neglected to such a degree and the rest are immaculate.
The view from cabin 7 was spectacular. The use of the canoes and boats for the lake are free. No air conditioning, but the wood for the fireplace was stocked for a cold night. Sure, the cabins are older and the deck needs to be power washed, but I thought the insides were plenty clean. The owners were friendly. I am planning on staying here again.
"Anyone who isn't a guest has to leave after 10pm". That was the line rudely said to us by the owner/manager as my family and I sat on the cabin porch quietly talking. It was supposed to be relaxing weekend visiting family who live in the area. How insulting and embarrassing! This place isn't worth the dirt it's built on. Why try to enforce sub arbitrary rule to adults who are simply having quiet conversation? The cabin we stayed in had slanted rooms, there's dangerous mold over the fire place and they have a list of the stupidest, most over baring and insulting rules I have ever seen. The only good thing about this place is that they had a decent amount of cookware in the kitchen. However, if you care about your health and actually enjoying a good place to stay with your family -- Do yourself a favor and find somewhere else to stay. There's a reason there's always vacancy here even during big town events.
Let me start by saying I never felt the place was dirty. Great view and centrally located. Maintenance on the other hand is not in the owners vocabulary. The camo duct tape over holes in the screen and holding parts of the door together was interesting. The sink was stained but not dirty, tile was falling off the wall and could have been put back on with a $4 tube of construction adhesive. A little maintenance would go a long way maybe some new furniture. All in all if I was in a pinch and needed a place last minute this place would probably have vacancy and wouldn't mind staying there again just not as high of expectations.
