Shingle Bay Campground - Gulf Islands National Park Reserve Introduce

Shingle Bay Campground, located on Pender Island within the Gulf Islands National Park Reserve in British Columbia, offers a unique camping experience for local nature enthusiasts. As a part of the Campgrounds & RV Parks category, it provides a tranquil setting beside the beach, nestled within a historic apple orchard.

Environment: The campground is situated beside the beach in an old apple orchard, providing a distinctive and scenic environment. Access to the campground involves descending a moderately sloped trail around a gorge after parking. The sound of soothing waves and the presence of wildlife such as deer, owls, eagles, and bats contribute to a peaceful atmosphere. The beach offers beautiful sunset views and excellent stargazing opportunities.

Services: Each labeled campsite at Shingle Bay Campground includes a designated tent setup area and a picnic table. The campground provides shared pit toilets (outhouses) which are noted to be clean. However, there is no potable water available, and no garbage service is provided. Campers are required to pack out all of their trash.

Features: A key feature of Shingle Bay Campground is its beachfront location within a historic apple orchard, offering a unique camping ambiance. Wildlife viewing is a significant draw, with frequent deer visits and opportunities to observe various birds and bats. The beach is ideal for enjoying beautiful sunsets and stargazing. For hikers, there is an unmapped trail heading southeast from the campground that travels up the seaside cliff, as well as a recommendation to try the hike to Roe Lake.

Important Considerations: Access to the campground is via a moderately sloped trail from the parking area, which may be challenging for those with mobility issues or carrying heavy gear. Cyclists should note that the gravel path heading into the campsite is quite steep. For hammock campers, there are limited suitable spots, and hammocks are not allowed on fruit trees, Garry oaks, or Arbutus trees; alternative setup near Douglas firs may be necessary. Campers must be self-sufficient regarding water and waste disposal.

I loved my stay in Shingle Bay Campground. You have to camp here when visiting Pender Island. After parking you descend a moderate sloped trail around a gorge to the campground that is located beside the beach in an old apple orchard. Each campsite is labeled and consists of a tent site setup area, picnic table, a shared pit toilet(outhouse) and secure food locker. You can enjoy deer visits, owls, eagles, bats and much more wildlife if observant. The soothing waves and wildlife soothe you to sleep. Sunset is beautiful as well as stargazing on the beach. Recommended.

A peaceful campground with a clean outhouse, no potable water and no garbage service. Pack out your trash! For a hammock camper, there are limited spots to hang a hammock. The site is in a historical orchard, so note that hammocks are not allowed on fruit trees, garry oaks, or arbutus trees. I ended up going away from the tent pad to set up by some douglas firs. The gravel path heading into the campsite is quite steep, keep that in mind if you cycle in like me. Great place to watch the sunset. Occasional deer sightings. Also try the hike to Roe Lake. There is a unmapped trail heading SE from the campground that travels up the seaside cliff.

Beautiful campground. About 5 km from the ferry. No potable water, outhouse is up the hill. I booked campsite 5, but they had moved my table up to where 9, 10, and 11 were. One of the crab apples fell onto 5 and wasps swarmed it. I wasn't told ahead of time that my site was moved. Too many people talking past midnight. The closest Lake is about 1.5 km away. If you're coming here, remember to bring lots of water, and the tide comes in quickly and unpredictably.

Very cool spot It's a steep descent from the very limited parking area to roughly 10 tent sites right on the water.

Amazing campsite. Old apple orchard attracts deers everyday! The beach is amazing with great views. It can get noisy in the peak season.
