For Arizona residents who cherish the raw beauty of the desert landscape and the refreshing coolness of a riverside escape, Shores Campground near Winkelman offers a unique and authentic outdoor experience. This isn't a bustling resort with countless amenities, but rather a "minimally developed" Bureau of Land Management (BLM) site, perfect for those who appreciate the simplicity of primitive camping. It's an ideal spot for locals looking to disconnect, enjoy the sounds of the Gila River, and experience the Sonoran Desert in its unadorned glory, especially when seeking a respite from the Arizona heat.
The Gila River Recreation Area, where Shores Campground is located, is a significant natural corridor through the desert, providing a crucial riparian habitat that attracts diverse wildlife, particularly birds. As a BLM site, Shores Campground offers a "first come, first served" and "no cost" camping opportunity, making it an accessible option for many Arizonans. Reviewers highlight its suitability for "alone or a small group," emphasizing its quiet nature despite its accessibility. While it embraces a rustic approach, providing essential facilities like "clean vault toilets" and trash disposal, it strongly encourages responsible "pack it in, pack it out" practices to preserve its natural state. Its unique microclimate by the river, offering temperatures "at least 10 degrees cooler" than surrounding areas, makes it a particularly attractive destination during Arizona's warmer months.
Understanding the distinct character and practical details of Shores Campground is crucial for planning your visit. This article aims to provide a clear, engaging, and informative overview, highlighting what makes this particular campground a suitable choice for Arizona locals looking for an authentic and tranquil outdoor retreat.

More specifically, it's situated approximately 3.5 miles upstream from the town of Winkelman, along the 9-mile section of the Gila River between Winkelman and Globe, in Gila County, Arizona. This area is about 70 miles north of Tucson and 100 miles southeast of Phoenix, making it a feasible drive for many Arizona residents.
Access to Shores Recreation Site is typically via Arizona Route 77 (SR 77), with the entrance road found near milepost 141.4. While the site features "gravel surfaced driveways" and parking, it's important to note the specific characteristics mentioned by reviewers and official sources regarding vehicle access. One reviewer mentioned "steep loose gravel hill," and some sources explicitly state that the site is "not suitable for large motor homes or RV trailers due to narrow clearance and maneuvering space" and that "the camp site is not suitable for motor homes bigger than a small pickup camper." However, other sources conflict, stating it has "paved driveways, so most RVs can navigate the area easily." Given these mixed reviews, it's prudent for those with large RVs to exercise caution or consider smaller setups. For those with suitable vehicles, the location offers immediate access to the Gila River, set within a scenic Sonoran Desert canyon, featuring "saguaro, mesquite and palo verde covered hills" and a rich "riparian area in mesquite-willow and cottonwood woodland." This riverside setting is key to its appeal, providing a cooler microclimate and lush surroundings contrasting with the arid desert uplands.

Great place to camp if yiu are alone or a small group. The vault toilets were clean. Not to many people for a BLM land as I could not see big rigs giing down the steep loose gravel hill. But the Camprolla made it. Vid on my youtube Allwonkyvids if you'd like to see more. Great spot for seeing some of the surrounding little towns.
Love this campground for when it’s hot. Was at least 10 degrees cooler down by the river than in our RV. Trash and pit toilets available. Seems like locals come here to party tho so I’ve always had to pick up trash when we go. Pack it in pack it out please! There are trash cans there!
