Explore family camping activities that bring all ages together, from outdoor games and scenic hikes to memorable campfire fun that creates lasting memories.
🌲 Introduction / Overview
For Minnesotans seeking a straightforward, no-frills camping experience that is deeply connected to the local social scene, Shorewood Campgrounds in Detroit Lakes offers a unique destination. This venue combines the rustic appeal of an open camping area with the convenience and camaraderie of an adjacent, well-regarded local establishment, the Shorewood Pub. Located right on the sunny side of Detroit Lake, Shorewood is known for its primitive, field-style camping which often caters to large groups and event overflow, including attendees of the famous WeFest concert.
The facility has a long history, proudly serving visitors and the community since 1973. It is not designed to be a luxury RV resort but rather a practical, spacious area for tents and basic camping setups. Its proximity to the popular Shorewood Pub ensures that campers are never far from friendly conversation, a cold drink, and a hot meal. The atmosphere is casual, welcoming, and centered around a strong sense of local community, making it a different—and often more lively—choice than traditional, quiet state park camping.

🎯 What is Worth Choosing Shorewood Campgrounds
For Minnesota campers, Shorewood Campgrounds is worth choosing if you are looking for a highly social, low-frills, and conveniently located base camp in the Detroit Lakes area, especially during major events.
1. The Social Campout: You should choose Shorewood if your priority is community and convenience over pristine wilderness. The ability to check in at the bar and have immediate access to a friendly pub serving hot food and cold drinks is its definitive advantage. This unique setup means you can enjoy the camaraderie of a local watering hole without having to drive back from your campsite.
2. The Event Go-To Spot: If you are attending a large event like WeFest, Shorewood offers an accessible alternative to the main festival grounds. It is often a more budget-friendly option for those who simply need a place to crash near the venue, providing the essentials and a lively atmosphere without the high cost of a full-service resort.
3. Budget-Conscious Travel: The camping rates, such as the quoted $15 to $20 per person, position it as an extremely affordable option for individuals or groups. While potential visitors should always confirm the current price and be prepared for primitive conditions (including very basic restrooms), the value proposition for the location and adjacent pub access is strong.
4. Field-Style Flexibility: Ideal for tent campers, groups, or small RVs that don't require full, paved hookups, the open, nine-acre field offers a practical, easy-in/easy-out solution. It is a pragmatic choice for the traveler who views a campsite as a place to sleep after a day of enjoying the lake or local events.

When I called they said 15$ per person, and there was some power, and to check in at the bar. The bar tender Casey was very friendly and the crowd, When we got there we were told 20per person, by a man, I said we were quoted 15$ by the lady that answered, he said she was "old" and was wrong. We did only pay the $15, next time...they should pay us. The out house is unusable. No plug ins. If I were giving Casey a review--5 stars .
