🌲 Introduction / Overview: Classic Minnesota Camping on Two Pristine Lakes
For Minnesotans seeking the quintessential "Up North" camping experience—complete with towering pine forests, clear water, and a sugar sand beach—the Side Lake Campground at McCarthy Beach State Park is an absolute premier destination. Located just north of Hibbing in the heart of Minnesota’s Iron Range and near the community of Side Lake, this campground offers a vibrant mix of recreational activities and modern amenities set within a strikingly beautiful natural environment. Its address, 7608 McCarthy Beach Rd, places you directly in a highly sought-after area renowned for its accessibility and natural charm.
The park’s main campground, Side Lake Campground, is uniquely positioned between Side Lake and the spectacular Sturgeon Lake. This dual-lake access is a major highlight, with the famous half-mile-long sand beach on Sturgeon Lake—often voted one of the best in North America—situated just across the road from the campground loops. The campground itself is nestled among tall, shady pine trees, immediately providing that immersive "up north feel" that local users crave.
While the campground can be busy, especially during the peak summer season—a testament to its immense popularity—it offers a wide array of sites to fit various preferences. The facility is well-equipped with services that ensure a comfortable stay, from electric hookups for RVs to modern shower buildings. The atmosphere is friendly, engaging, and centered entirely around enjoying the pristine water and extensive trail system that defines this corner of St. Louis County. This guide will provide all the factual details you need to secure your spot at this dynamic and beautiful Minnesota State Park campground.
🗺️ Location and Accessibility
Side Lake Campground is located within McCarthy Beach State Park in Northeastern Minnesota, an area celebrated for its extensive forests and lake chains.
Address: 7608 McCarthy Beach Rd, Side Lake, MN 55781, USA (Adjacent to the main park office at 7622 McCarthy Beach Rd)
Phone: (218) 274-7200 (McCarthy Beach State Park Office)
Accessibility is straightforward. The park is located approximately 16 miles northwest of the city of Hibbing, MN, which serves as the nearest major hub for groceries, fuel, and dining. The approach involves taking U.S. Highway 169 north to County Road 5, which leads directly to the park entrance on McCarthy Beach Road. The main campground loops are immediately accessible upon check-in at the park office.
For those with RVs, the park is accommodating, with an RV length limit of 40 feet. However, visitors should note the reviews suggesting that the roads in the electric loop can be "narrow" with "sharp curves," necessitating careful maneuvering. The campground's layout offers a choice between the high-demand, lakeside sites—which can feel "crammed in" with minimal privacy due to their popularity and open nature—and the quieter, more secluded sites found in the end loop or those set further back from the water, which often provide more vegetation and space between neighbors. Its location deep within the pine forest ensures a genuine wilderness atmosphere while remaining easily reachable via well-maintained county roads.

🌟 What is Worth Choosing
Choosing Side Lake Campground is choosing a quintessential, amenity-rich Minnesota State Park experience. It is worth choosing for three compelling reasons that consistently draw local users back:
First, the Unmatched Beach Quality is the main draw. The Sturgeon Lake beach is truly exceptional—a half-mile of soft, sugar sand with shallow, clear water that provides a safe and beautiful swimming environment for all ages. It is a unique natural feature that provides a true resort-like experience within a protected State Park setting.
Second, the Abundance of Recreational Activities ensures a packed itinerary. With direct access to two lakes for boating and fishing, miles of trails for hiking and biking, and the availability of on-site rentals, there is an activity for every member of the family or group. This functional variety minimizes the need to travel off-site, maximizing your time spent enjoying the natural surroundings.
Third, the Balance of Comfort and Wilderness is ideal. While you are nestled in the "up north feel" with tall pine shade, you are not sacrificing convenience. The availability of electric sites, flush toilets, and hot showers makes this a highly accessible and comfortable camping experience, even for newcomers to the outdoors. The convenience of these modern amenities, combined with the raw beauty of the pine forests, makes Side Lake Campground a perfect and easy choice for a Minnesota family vacation.

The campground is nice and shaded with tall pines and having it right on the lake is a plus. Definitely has the up north feel. The day use area is right across the road as well. Most of the spots are crammed in but the end loop and the sites farther from the lake are quite nice. It can be a busy campground.
Fishing, swimming, biking, hiking, canoe, and small boat rentals available. Nice and clean sites.
Great staff and facilities.
Very nice. Kids loved the beach
