We took the cavern tour and it was very interesting. The tour guides were exchange students and very nice. We had a good time, definitely worth a visit! Lots of cool things in the gift shop, some things were overpriced as those types of shops tend to be. Still got a nice sweater for $36
Enjoyed the cavern tour. Helen was adorable and fun. The gift shop was next level! Beautiful area. Close to Seneca Rocks.
Went for cavern tour and it was cool as usual. Seems like there is less lighting and shorter tour than a decade ago. Couldn't help but notice how overpriced the gift shop is though. $90 for cheap hoodies, $15 for WV wildlife calendar that I paid $12 at outdoor store in Franklin 🙄, $6 candy bars, etc. Not much in area so kind of is what it is. EDIT for snarky owner: The candy bar I got did not have huckleberries. It was a plain chocolate bar that had a bear on it and said something about Grumpy. It had no indication about where it was made, and tasted as such. There were WV hoodies that were marked 90 bucks. Maybe you should lower prices of calendars too? Or the 44.99 I paid for a cheap toy we saw at Tractor Supply for 24.99 lol. I paid 9.99 for piece of pyrite lol. Glad Trumps in office? LOL see how much them chinese hoodies are when tariffs go into effect. Like i said buddy, it is what it is. Tourist trap
When we checked into our room at the motel it was very nicely decorated and clean! We appreciated that! What we did not appreciate was that the motel had no air conditioning (only heat) and no microwave. WiFi did not work also! The motel did not have an ice machine but there was a community ice cooler for everyone to use. The community cooler consisted of two half melted bags of ice! After the gift shop closed at 5pm we were the only couple on the entire property. The parking lot was completely empty except for our car. This was concerning because what if an emergency happened on the property and there’s no one there to help us! For example what if our toilet started leaking or if our refrigerator broke or what if we had no water pressure. I’ve never been to a hotel or motel when no one‘s been on the property at all times. If you have an issue with your room there’s no one to address the problem until the gift shop opens the next day. The power went out at midnight on our first night! The motel had no power but the gift shop next door did! It seem to us that Smoke Hole Caverns and Resorts cares more about their gift shop then about the guest at their motel. Why doesn’t the motel have a back up generator to keep their guests comfortable? If we wanted to stay out in the cabin in the middle of the woods we would’ve done that! Since we had no cell service and not wanting to call 911 we contacted the local hospital who gave us the number for the county to advise them of the power outage. Two hours later motel power was restored. Not satisfied with our experience at the motel, we decided to leave a day early. We were told we were going to be charged for the day anyway. That was our experience at Smoke Hole Caverns and Resorts!
This was our first visit to the Smoke Hole area and I am so glad that I chose Smoke Hole Caverns Log Motel for our 3 night stay! This little place is a gem indeed. Our room was super clean and you can tell that the owners really care about the appearance of the grounds and rooms. The beds were comfy and pillows were also and towels super nice. It was like stepping back in time to a retro Motel from the 70's. We would definitely stay here again. It was a good location for us to start our trip out at Blackwater Falls State Park and travel to Smoke Hole, what a scenic drive. We were also close to Seneca Rocks and Spruce Knob, breathtaking views at Spruce Knob. We ended our stay with a trip over to Cass Scenic Railroad for the Bald Knob trip. The gift shop here is stunning. We did not expect to see what we did when we stepped inside to check in. It was a joy to get on some of the roads less traveled in this area, you don't find many gravel roads any more and the sound of the gravel popping off the tires brought back memories of long ago. There is no cell service here, but that did not bother us. You can travel just a bit down the road to Petersburg for cell service.
