🛶 Introduction / Overview
For Minnesotans drawn to the rugged beauty of the North Shore and the challenge of the backcountry, the South Egge Lake Camp on the Superior Hiking Trail (SHT) stands out as an exceptionally rewarding destination. Located in the wilderness area near Finland, MN, this site offers the classic SHT experience: a walk-in, primitive camping opportunity set against the stunning backdrop of the Minnesota landscape. It is not merely a place to sleep; it's a tranquil retreat where the elements of the North Woods—the clear waters of Egge Lake, the sturdy boreal forest, and the peaceful seclusion—come together perfectly.
South Egge Lake Camp is one of the many designated backcountry sites managed by the Superior Hiking Trail Association (SHTA). These campsites are maintained for the use of backpackers and section hikers traversing the trail. They operate on a first-come, first-served basis with no fees or reservations required for small groups (typically under eight people), embodying the cooperative spirit of the trail. What sets the South Egge site apart is its highly desirable location directly on the lake, offering campers immediate access to the water's edge. Customer reviews consistently highlight its spaciousness and the quality of the communal facilities, suggesting it is a larger, more welcoming site compared to some of the smaller, more tucked-away SHT camps.
This location is a favorite for those completing the popular sections of the SHT around the Finland area, providing a comfortable and scenic stopover between trailheads like the Finland Community Center and the challenging terrain further north towards Blesener Creek Camp.

📍 Location and Accessibility
The official address for the access area of this backcountry location is generally listed as Superior Hiking Trail, Finland, MN 55603, USA. It is crucial for local users to understand that South Egge Lake Camp is a hike-in site, accessible only by foot via the SHT footpath.
A popular way to reach the camp is from the Finland Community Center Trailhead on County Road 7, which offers a picturesque and moderately challenging hike into the Egge Lake area. This approach, often cited in reviews, provides a beautiful immersion into the maple and mixed hardwood forests characteristic of the region before reaching the campsite. The hike is approximately 4.7 miles (or roughly 7.6 kilometers) from the Finland Recreation Center Trailhead, making it an excellent length for a first-day backpacking trip or a challenging out-and-back day hike with a scenic break at the lake.
The South Egge Lake Camp is strategically located on the trail approximately 0.2 miles south of its sister campsite, North Egge Lake Camp (SHT Mile Marker 172.9 northbound, according to older SHT reference materials). Its proximity to a well-known trailhead and its direct lake access make it a highly desirable stop for many hikers moving along this mid-section of the SHT corridor.

Beautiful hike from the Finland Community Center Trailhead. The camp was spacious with a great fire pit and swim area. Some friendly swans hung out on our little beach at sunset making it the perfect end to our one night stay before moving on to Blesener Creek Camp.
Beautiful site with easy access to the lake, plenty of flat ground, and trees for hammocks.
Loved this camp site! Water at camp, great view of lake, clothes line and bear cable!
Multiple sites for tents and good trees for hammocks, including some prime trees right next to the lake. Site has a bear cable, water source is right from the lake next to the site.
Love this site. Right on the lake, a lot of room to spread out, nice fire ring and benches. Downside was that there was little to no dry wood nearby for an easy fire. Lake view is totally worth it though.
