South Pike Bay Campground Introduce
Introduction / Overview
For local residents of Minnesota seeking the quintessential North Woods experience, South Pike Bay Campground stands out as a genuine, highly coveted lakeside sanctuary. Nestled on the south shore of beautiful Pike Bay, which connects to the larger Cass Lake, this campground offers a rustic, deeply relaxing escape within the sprawling Chippewa National Forest. It is consistently praised by local families—many of whom have made it an annual tradition for 15 years or more—for its ability to provide a perfect place to "refresh your soul" amidst large camping spaces, fresh air, and sunshine.
Managed by the U.S. Forest Service, South Pike Bay is deliberately maintained as a rustic retreat. This means it eschews the modern amenities of private RV parks in favor of a genuine wilderness experience. It features only non-electric campsites, catering to those who prefer tent camping or self-sufficient RV use. The setting is stunning: a long spur stretches along the shoreline in a pleasant stand of mixed hardwoods and majestic old-growth pine, offering ample shade and a serene atmosphere. Importantly, a few of the most desirable sites boast their own hard sand beach frontage, allowing campers to practically pitch their tent on the water's edge.
The popularity of South Pike Bay is immense, largely due to its secluded charm and direct access to the fantastic water recreation of Cass Lake. As one user noted, the good, particularly the highly desired lakeside, spots are often reserved immediately. This high demand is a testament to the campground's quality and its friendly host, making advance reservations a necessary ritual for local campers who wish to secure their spot at this perfect North Woods basecamp. Despite being rustic, the campground is meticulously cared for, providing a peaceful, quiet, and unspoiled environment for families and solo adventurers alike.
Location and Accessibility
South Pike Bay Campground is ideally situated for local Minnesota users seeking easy access to the region’s best lakes and forests. Located in north central Minnesota, the campground is part of the extensive Chippewa National Forest. Its specific address is near Cass Lake, MN 56633, USA.
Accessibility is straightforward: the campground is located a short drive—approximately six miles northwest—from the town of Cass Lake, which provides necessary supplies like groceries, hardware, and dining. For those approaching from the south, the park is typically accessed via U.S. Highway 2 and then a few miles east on Forest Road 2137. This convenient access from major routes makes it a favorite destination for both weekend visitors from the Twin Cities area and local residents.
The campground itself is highly accessible for various types of recreation. It is a drive-in location with campsites suitable for both campers and RVs (with a max length up to 65 feet), and also functions as a boat-in access point for certain sites. A paved trailhead for the Migizi Bike Trail runs directly on-site, providing immediate access to 14 miles of paved trail for biking, walking, and rollerblading along the lakeshore. Furthermore, its location on Pike Bay provides excellent water access via an on-site boat ramp, offering quick entry to the legendary fishing and boating waters of Cass Lake.

Customer Reviews
Please stop reserving all the lake side spots and not showing up. This is a very popular campground with a fun host. However, it's very rustic and the good spots get reserved right away.
Our family has been coming here for closing in on 15 years now, such a perfect place to relax and enjoy some fresh air and sunshine. Large camping spaces or small, camper or tent. The perfect place to refresh your soul.
Lovely clear lake with nice large campsites. Vault toilets, no electricity, potable water from a hand pump. Great paved bicycle trails, including Migezi (around Cass Lake) and MRT (Mississippi River Trail). Nice paddling on the lake.
