Explore family camping activities that bring all ages together, from outdoor games and scenic hikes to memorable campfire fun that creates lasting memories.
Introduction / Overview
For Minnesota backpackers, the Superior Hiking Trail (SHT) is a collection of challenging climbs, rewarding views, and well-placed primitive campsites. Among these, the South Sonju Lake Camp stands out as one of the most desirable overnight stops, particularly for those traveling in groups or those who appreciate a quick, scenic detour. Located deep within the North Woods, near the community of Finland, MN, this site is officially managed by the Superior Hiking Trail Association (SHTA) and is a celebrated stop along the vast 300+ mile footpath.
This campsite is distinguished from its neighboring counterpart, North Sonju, by its superior setting and access. As noted by past visitors, South Sonju is "a much better spot," primarily because of its close proximity to the trail's highlight in this section: Lilly's Island. This island is connected to the shore by a rustic boardwalk, providing campers with an incredible spot for sunset views, quiet reflection, and wildlife viewing. The site itself is one of the SHT’s designated multi-group campsites, meaning it is significantly larger than the standard sites, designed to comfortably accommodate up to 6 or more tents—or, as one reviewer noted, providing "Huge site to put multiple texts up. We had 15 people with 5 groups." This makes it an ideal choice for youth organizations, extended family hikes, or those who simply appreciate extra space. It is a true example of the SHT’s commitment to providing accessible, rustic wilderness camping for all who commit to the journey.
Location and Accessibility
South Sonju Lake Camp is located along the main corridor of the Superior Hiking Trail, approximately at SHT Mile 176.2 (mileage varies slightly depending on map edition). The general location is associated with Finland, MN 55603, which serves as the nearest town for services and shuttle drop-offs.
Accessibility to this primitive site is excellent, making it a popular choice for both short overnight trips and as a key stop on longer treks. The most common access point is the Sonju Lake Road Trailhead (Lake County Road 7), which is a relatively easy hike of approximately 1.5 to 2 miles to reach the campsite. This short distance, described as an "Easy hike from the Sonju road parking lot" by a customer, means that even hikers getting a late start can quickly make it to a prime overnight location. The terrain in this section, while still typical of the SHT with its roots and rocks, features minimal major elevation gain, making the approach manageable even with a full pack. Like all SHT campsites, access is exclusively by foot; there are no vehicular options, and users must be prepared to hike in all of their gear. Its proximity to the Baptism River crossing adds another scenic element to the approach, which includes a footbridge over the east branch of the river.
Services Offered
As a designated, primitive backpacking campsite on the Superior Hiking Trail, South Sonju Lake Camp adheres to the SHTA's model of providing essential infrastructure to support a Leave No Trace experience, emphasizing self-sufficiency and resource sharing.
Features / Highlights
The features that elevate South Sonju Lake Camp from a simple stopover to a destination are intrinsically tied to its unique lakefront position and spacious layout.

What is Worth Choosing
For Minnesota backpackers, choosing South Sonju Lake Camp is choosing a blend of convenience, capacity, and iconic North Shore scenery that few other SHT sites can match.
The single most compelling reason to plan your route around this stop is its proximity to Lilly’s Island. This easily accessible, unique feature provides a spectacular spot to spend the evening, offering expansive views across Sonju Lake, making the camp feel less like a simple rest stop and more like a scenic destination. The views from the island, particularly at sunset, are consistently cited as a highlight of this entire section of the trail, securing its reputation for "5 stars for scenery."
Furthermore, its designation as a large, multi-group campsite solves a major logistical problem for many Minnesotans: camping with a large party. Unlike smaller, standard SHT sites that struggle to fit more than a couple of tents, South Sonju provides the necessary space and infrastructure to host groups of up to 15 or more, making it the perfect rendezvous point for extended family or large groups of friends who are tackling the SHT together.
Coupled with the easy hike-in access from the Sonju Lake Road Trailhead, South Sonju Lake Camp offers a minimal-effort, maximum-reward overnight stay. It is highly recommended to secure this spot early in the day, especially during peak season, as its fantastic location and amenities make it a favorite for all who hike the superior trail.
A much better spot compared to North Sonju. I'll give it 5 stars for scenery since Lilly's Island is about 20 yards down the trail but knock a few stars down for tent/ hammock locations. Be sure to get here early for the prime spots.
It has a camp saw. Huge site to put multiple texts up. We had 15 people with 5 groups. Close to Lilly island. Great water access. Easy hike from the Sonju road parking lot.
Really nice spot with a lot of room for either tents or hammocks. Also really close to Lilly Island which is a beautiful little island giving you a great view of Sonju Lake
Calm lake with two free non reservable campsites. Sunsets are amazing but no close hikes to scenic overlooks makes this hike for the water views only.
Great site. The latrine is not the best, but hey... You're in the woods... Who's complaining? Easy water access and great sunset views! Short walk to Lily Island.
