Spafford Park Campground Introduce
As a notable entry within the "Campgrounds & RV Parks" category, Spafford Park Campground, managed by the City of Cloquet, Minnesota, offers a distinctive camping experience that blends natural beauty with convenient urban access. Situated directly on the picturesque banks of the Saint Louis River, this campground is a popular choice for both transient visitors and seasonal campers, providing a well-maintained and welcoming environment for outdoor enthusiasts.
The environment at Spafford Park Campground is defined by its prime location on an island or peninsula within the Saint Louis River. This riverside setting provides a serene and scenic backdrop for camping, offering opportunities for river views directly from some campsites. The campground benefits from being "mostly shaded," with mature trees providing a welcome canopy, especially during warmer months. This natural foliage contributes to a comfortable and somewhat secluded atmosphere, even though the park is located within the city of Cloquet.
While nestled in a natural riverine setting, the campground's proximity to a highway and, in some instances, a ceiling tile factory, can lead to some ambient noise. However, many reviews indicate that this does not significantly detract from the overall peacefulness. The presence of the Saint Louis River allows for the enjoyment of water-based activities directly from the campground, enhancing the outdoor experience.
The park is part of Cloquet's wider commitment to parks and recreational assets, ensuring a well-maintained and eco-friendly environment. The flat terrain with a mix of open spaces and wooded areas provides a pleasant landscape for various camping setups.
Spafford Park Campground, as a service provider in the "Campgrounds & RV Parks" sector, offers a range of essential and highly-rated services and facilities designed to ensure a comfortable stay for its guests. The campground has approximately 21-22 campsites, catering to both RV and tent campers.
For RVs, many sites offer electric and water hookups. Critically, some sites also provide full hookups, including sewer connections, a highly desirable amenity for RV owners. The sites are designed to accommodate various sizes of RVs, with reported maximum lengths of 40 feet and widths of 12 feet, and room for slide-outs. There are both pull-through (around 3) and back-in sites available, offering flexibility for different vehicle types and preferences. While some reviews mention that specific sites might have low-hanging limbs, the overall utility connections are generally functional.
Tent camping is also a viable option, with dedicated tent sites available, some of which are located directly against the river, offering scenic views. It's noted that tent sites are essentially walk-in, requiring campers to park either at the bathhouse or in the main park lot, but the walk is short.
Key facilities at Spafford Park Campground, consistently praised by visitors, include:
- Exceptionally Clean Restrooms and Showers: The bathhouse and restrooms are frequently highlighted as being very clean and well-maintained, with free hot showers available for campers. Access to these facilities might require a code obtained from the camp host, which adds a layer of security.
- Dump Station: A convenient service for RVers without full sewer hookups at their site, ensuring proper waste disposal.
- Fire Pits/Fire Rings and Picnic Tables: Every site typically includes a designated fire pit for campfires and a picnic table, essential amenities for the camping experience.
- Firewood: While not always sold directly at the campground, firewood is readily available from area convenience stores, ensuring campers can enjoy campfires.
- Campground Host: The presence of a dedicated camp host contributes significantly to the positive atmosphere and ensures that facilities are well-managed and assistance is available.
These services, combined with regular inspections by the Saginaw County Health Department, underscore the campground's commitment to cleanliness and visitor comfort, aligning with the expectations of the "Campgrounds & RV Parks" category.
Spafford Park Campground distinguishes itself with several features that enhance the camping experience, particularly for those interested in outdoor recreation and local exploration. The core features revolve around its natural setting and its integration with the wider Cloquet community.
- River Access and Water Activities: Being on the Saint Louis River is a major feature. The campground offers a boat launch, facilitating boating, canoeing, kayaking, and fishing directly from the park. The river's flow towards Duluth and Lake Superior adds to its appeal.
- Proximity to Walking/Hiking Trails: Access to pedestrian bridges and snowmobile trails (which convert to walking/hiking trails in warmer months) provides ample opportunities for exploring the natural surroundings on foot or by bicycle.
- Pet-Friendly Policy: Spafford Park Campground is welcoming to pets, allowing campers to bring their furry companions along, though specific restrictions might apply.
- Seasonal and Monthly Camping Focus: A significant feature of Spafford Park Campground is its strong emphasis on seasonal and monthly camping, particularly during the peak season. This creates a stable and often friendly community atmosphere, with many returning campers. While offering daily rates, the focus on longer stays is evident in its reservation policies and pricing structure.
- Accessibility to Local Attractions: The campground's location in Cloquet provides easy access to local amenities and attractions. Campers can walk to local businesses like the Northeastern Bar or coffee shops. Furthermore, Cloquet boasts unique attractions such as a Frank Lloyd Wright-designed gas station, and it serves as an excellent gateway to the greater Duluth area (approximately 18 miles away) and the scenic North Shore of Lake Superior. This allows campers to combine outdoor relaxation with urban exploration and cultural visits.
- Small and Intimate Size: With its limited number of sites, the campground offers a more intimate and less overwhelming atmosphere compared to larger, more commercial parks, which many campers find appealing.
The campground actively leverages its location to provide a blend of natural recreation and convenient access to local points of interest, enriching the overall camping experience for its diverse clientele.

For example, in previous years, it was primarily available to monthly and seasonal campers by reservation due to COVID-19 protocols. It is advisable to contact Cloquet City Hall directly for the most current reservation policies and availability.
- Strong Community Aspect: The prevalence of seasonal and monthly campers contributes to a friendly, community-like atmosphere, often highlighted by visitors who feel welcomed by fellow campers.
While some campers acknowledge the potential for minor traffic or train noise, the overwhelming sentiment from reviews is positive, emphasizing the cleanliness, affordability, and the pleasant riverside setting. Customer Reviews
Campground seems quiet. Located right next to the river. Has walking trails, bathrooms, and a park nearby. One downfall, it's right next to USG, a factory.
A beautiful walk along the path, leads to this bridge and into a paved trail area. Very enjoyable. Easy terrain for all fitness levels.
Beautiful and quiet trail. Lots of scenery. Well maintained and paved walking trail.
Nice trails and decent camping accommodations. A bit close to the freeway and the rest of the town to feel like you're camping in nature, but a good spot for a relatively short and relaxing stay.
A beautiful place that you for sure want to come to. Like any other good campground has is nature. This is a place where you can walk the walking trail, fish off the dock, and kayak the river around USG.
