Family Camping Activities for All Ages: Games, Hiking, and Campfire Fun
Explore family camping activities that bring all ages together, from outdoor games and scenic hikes to memorable campfire fun that creates lasting memories.
For Minnesotans seeking the ultimate **water-based wilderness immersion**, the **Sphunge Island West K53 Campsite** offers a pristine, secluded, and highly sought-after experience within the spectacular **Voyageurs National Park (VNP)**. Located on Kabetogama Lake near the Kabetogama Township, this site is not a conventional drive-up campground but a designated, reservable **boat-in campsite**. VNP is unique as a water-dominant park, and these island sites are the key to unlocking its roadless wilderness.
Sphunge Island West (K53) is officially designated as a **Small Campsite**, designed to accommodate up to nine people and two tent pads (each 10'x10'). However, traveler reviews highlight its generous feel: one camper noted it was a **"Huge campsite and it is taken care of well."** The sense of space is crucial, particularly for families, as it allowed for a **"stress free camping experience with our kids and dogs without bothering anyone so they swim as much as they want with eyes on them easily."** This implies a large, open area leading to the water, perfect for keeping an eye on water play.
The experience is intentionally rustic, emphasizing self-sufficiency and minimal environmental impact. Visitors must plan carefully, bringing in all necessities, including drinking water, as facilities are primitive. While the lack of showers made one visitor **"ready for a shower so I wouldn’t have lasted than a weekend,"** the trade-off is **"Heaven on earth"—**the ultimate solitude and natural beauty of a Minnesota island camping trip, complete with **Verizon cell service** for emergencies. All overnight stays at this VNP campsite require a reservation and fee through Recreation.gov.

Good for kids
On-site parking
Huge campsite and it is taken care of well and it gave us a stress free camping experience with our kids and dogs without bothering anyone so they swim as much as they want with eyes on them easily. We brought our own portable potty as we weren’t about to use the pit toilet. We brought a generator that we used to charge our phones and it got through us the weekend. We brought a big water jug with us on the boat. We had cell service as listed (Verizon) in case we had an emergency. Heaven on earth but I was ready for a shower so I wouldn’t have lasted than a weekend without shower access.
