Customer Reviews
A nicely maintained free public camping & recreation area on a small lake in the Black Kettle and McClellan Creek National Grasslands. There are tables in various locations between the parking area and the lake. Some tables are next to the parking area. There are no signs prohibiting car camping... there are no signs saying anything at all but info was easy to find online. I stayed in my van in the parking area at night and utilized a fire pit and table next to the parking area. It was peaceful. I first attempted the dispersed area across the lake and though it seems alot more interesting .. the roads were muddy deep sandy dirt in some areas and my van seems to get stuck easily. Nothing amazing other than it's a usfs campgrounds and it's still free ! There are multiple dispersed areas. Google first took me to a dispersed area that was not near the lake. It was a really cool looking spot, but I was instantly surrounded by cows. The cow mob wasn't even stopped by the first cattle guard. The second cattle guard they could cross thankfully. It was very entertaining but I can't imagine camping in that area unless you really love cows with no respect for personal space. I recommend staying in the area marked campground.
Great place to camp or just picnic. Sandy bottom, not squishy mud, clear water with very little algae growth. Boat ramp right where swimming happens, and in a little cove at the far end by the toilets, there is a tire swing hanging off a limb. The rope looks good now, but if you or your kids want to use it, check the rope especially up top at the knot. Spent full 2 weeks here, and it was really nice. The forestry service does an outstanding job keeping the place clean and trimmed. They are serious about vehicles driving on the grass, SO DONT. One of the better campgrounds with clear cold water and pit toilets, so please show respect. SKI
Best campground we found in a long time. When we arrived there was only one other person camping the day we got there and they left on our second day. Our second and third day we were the only campers. It's very clean and quiet. We found the perfect spot for camping with a child very close to the bathrooms rite next to a bench and fire pit with a path down to the water where we could fish and swim with a tire swing. Our second night though we all slept in the car. We had just put our daughter to bed and we're sitting outside the tent in our chairs when we heard movement behind us so we got out the big light and looked around then we heard the same thing to our right we couldn't see anything but then we heard a growl that was coming from between our tent and our car. In the tree line. We decided to get our daughter and run for the car on the way to the car we had three sets of eyes on us from the treeline we got in turned on the headlights and made good use of our sound system to scare away whatever it was that was growling at us. There was growling howling and barking again about 3am but we were still in the Car. We stayed in the car til 10am when we woke up. We packed up and left early. Very good spot for day fishing and swimming with the kids but not for camping overnight especially with kids. Be safe and aware of your surroundings and bring protection! On our way out we looked where the tree sets of eyes were and took a picture of a pile of bones we found.
Nice little campground mostly for tents but a few campers can fit here. Other side of dam has 3 big spots in the trees next to the lake. Clean restrooms and quiet at night.
Cute out of the way hideaway bathroom area was clean. Campground was very neat and clean. Look forward to bringing the grandkids out
