Springdale Creek Camp Introduce

Introduction / Overview

For Minnesota’s dedicated backpackers, Springdale Creek Camp offers a deeply satisfying and conveniently located rest stop along the iconic Superior Hiking Trail (SHT). Situated near Tofte, this is a designated, primitive backcountry campsite, not a drive-in facility, embodying the authentic wilderness experience that defines the SHT. It is a vital overnight resting point for hikers traversing the sections between Britton Peak and the Temperance River State Park, an area known for its stunning views, challenging climbs, and beautiful maple forests.

The camp itself is known for being nestled right beside its namesake, Springdale Creek, which provides a reliable water source—a crucial feature on the trail. It is praised by hikers for its generous size and peaceful atmosphere, offering ample room for multiple tents and a communal fire ring area. The site’s layout is unique, featuring two distinct camping zones, one closer to the creek and a separate area "up the hill" where the latrine is often located. This dual-level setup can be confusing upon arrival but ultimately helps spread out groups, enhancing the feeling of privacy and solitude. This is an essential resource for hikers—it requires no fees or reservations, but demands strict adherence to Leave No Trace principles, emphasizing stewardship of this precious North Shore environment.

Springdale Creek Camp is a testament to the SHT Association's commitment to providing well-maintained, free accommodation for those willing to put in the miles.

Location and Accessibility

Springdale Creek Camp is located on the main footpath of the Superior Hiking Trail, within the general vicinity of Tofte, MN 55615, USA, in Cook County.

    Hike-In Only:

This is a backcountry site and is not accessible by car. It requires backpacking in from the nearest SHT trailheads, such as Britton Peak parking lot or the backpacker parking area at Temperance River State Park.

    Section Placement:

It is located on a popular mid-northern section of the SHT, generally situated between the scenic areas of Carlton Peak and the rugged Temperance River gorge.

    Water Proximity:

The camp is situated right along Springdale Creek, ensuring that hikers have a convenient and reliable water source for filtering, which is highly valued after a long day of strenuous hiking in the Sawtooth Mountains.

    Tofte Proximity:

The camp is geographically close to the trail town of Tofte, making it a feasible first or last night stop for hikers beginning or ending a section hike who require shuttle services or resupply.

Hikers must carry the necessary maps and plan their mileage carefully, as SHT campsites are typically spaced 5 to 10 miles apart, making this an essential overnight stop along this particular route.

Services Offered

As one of the Superior Hiking Trail Association's 94 designated campsites, Springdale Creek Camp provides crucial, basic infrastructure for responsible wilderness camping.

    Tent Pads:

The camp features multiple cleared and level tent pads spread across at least two distinct areas (upper and lower), providing plenty of room for several tents and accommodating the SHT's "shared camp" policy.

    Fire Ring & Seating:

A designated fire ring is centrally located, often featuring log or plank benches for communal seating, which encourages hikers to share their fire and trail stories.

    Sanitation:

An open-air backcountry latrine (outhouse) is provided in the upper camp area for proper human waste disposal. It is the primary method for sanitation and, despite being rustic, is necessary for trail preservation.

    Food Storage:

The site generally includes a designated area for hanging food bags (bear hangs) to protect food from black bears and other critters, though hikers must supply their own rope/system.

    Water Source:

Immediate access to the Springdale Creek is the water source. All water must be treated (filtered/purified) before consumption.

    No Fees or Reservations:

There are no fees, permits, or reservations required, but campers must be prepared to share the site with fellow hikers, especially during peak fall color season.

Springdale Creek Camp is a highlight of this SHT section, known for its tranquil environment and practical benefits for hikers.

We went down the hill where we thought the campsite was and set up our tents. Plenty of nice spots but we couldn’t find the laterite. We finally figured out there’s another camp area if you go up the hill! That’s where the latrine is (needs serious attention, btw). We liked the spot closer to the creek.
