Drove 5 hours only to not be able to stay. The tent sites were all flooded and covered in muck. It was a literal swamp. The staff in the office was semi friendly but did hesitantly offer a refund after giving some speel about why they shouldn't. I feel ownership should either remove tent camping or rework the grounds for it as it was already flooded on a Wednesday and was supposed to rain on a Friday, so what would happen then. Also the lack of space between sites at least for the tent area is ridiculous. There's absolutely no room for moving around. Hate to say it but if your tent camper your low class citizen here
Besides not having any trees on my site, it was a very nice campground. The store was well stocked in everything you would need, including tents. The people who worked the campground all spoke both English and French.
Spaces are VERY close together and it’s very loud. We looked around where the cabins are and it’s gorgeous back there. The FHU RV sites are jammed together, though - which isn’t great. We actually had to watch to be sure not to trip over our neighbor’s sewer hose - literally a foot outside our door. Not sure how this place is a Holiday? We reserved a week here - we stayed one night and left for another park. It just wasn’t the relaxing atmosphere we needed, unfortunately.
1st off, we consider ourselves travellers, not campers. So we do KOA a lot. This is a really nice place for camping, especially with kids. Very rustic and treed in,,satellites won't work unless looking straight up. Cable not so good, with very few channels, but over all, not a big issue for 2 nites. Spaces in bak not level at all but doable with a bit of work. I do find it irrating when places hav 1 water line for 2 spots. Which means we had to run line under trl to hook up 6 ft from front door. They are 50 years old and are doing upgrades as time goes along. Good an bad, but I would stay here again now that I know what to ask for. Spaces in front half are more level. Staff was great getting us a different place due to nothing but dirt, outside front door. It was rainey an misty so didn't want to track dirt in with 2 small dogs. Staff gave me an extra cable line since my 20 ft would not reach from hook up to trl. Like I said, it was a bit frustrating at first, but all was well an settled in for a Really nice visit
Called last minute after being disappointed by the state Straits campground and they were able to find us a spot. The staff is very helpful and friendly. They deliver wood and ice to your site when you buy it. We even called on our way back from a motorcycle ride to ask for wood, because we weren’t going to make it before they closed and they had it ready. Our site was great. It was gravel. The table and fire pit were both clean. The main reason I was going to stay at the straits campground in town was so we could ride our bicycles to the Mackinac Island ferry. Well, guess what?? There is a free shuttle from the KOA campground to the ferry and back- they also transported our bicycles! It took 1 hour from the time we called the shuttle for us to get picked up, shuttled, ferried and be on the island! Return trip was just as fast and easy. Highly recommend!!
We are tent or hammock campers with a small car and this was our second KOA of our little road trip. We arrived here after having booked ahead of time. The check in process was easy, the staff were very friendly. The bathrooms were pretty clean and the showers, though small, were quite adequate. Okay, onto the not so great. The tent campsites were tiny and just kinda stuck wherever they could be squeezed in. We were right next to the road, with no real trees to block sound or over coverage. The site was muddy, even without recent rain. The bugs were swarming us the second we stepped out of the car and that was with bug spray on. We lit a bug candle right away so we could try and set the tent up but it was rough and as soon as we got everything set up and got inside our tent the number of bugs hitting the tent sounds like rainfall (it was not raining, and we did not have a light on in our tent as it was still daylight). The sound of traffic was terribly loud all night, which isn't really the fault of the KOA but is something I feel I should add if you're not in a camper or a cabin it's hard to sleep through. Lastly, it was hard to find where their potable water was available for tent campers. We went all around the campground looking for a sign (the map didn't have it listed as far as we could tell, but maybe we just missed it?). All this to say it wasn't awful but if I were tent camping again I'd probably skip this KOA. It seems to be geared more towards campers and cabins. No pictures this time because I literally could not stand outside of our tent without being swarmed by a plague level number of gnats and mosquitoes.
This is my opinion and should be taken as such. Granted everyone has been recovering from the past I've storm this year. For a koa, this one was lacking a little. There was a dog park, mini golf and a bounce pad. Where my rating comes from is that we paid a lock in fee for a certain site. When we arrived we were moved to a different site. We did get a full refund for the lock in fee, however......I feel this sets a precedence that you could pick a site and they could put you anywhere? I compare it to the Seinfeld episode of taking the reservation but not keeping the reservation. The staff was nice and informative. It is pretty close to a lot of things. The ferry to the island is 7 minutes away.
We had an awesome experience with our cabin reservation. Everything we needed was provided in the cabin (towels, utensils, stove, coffee maker, refrigerator, etc).
Hosts Todd and Rhonda went the extra mile to make our stay great. They made for an excellent KOA experience for us.
