Stan Murray Shelter - Appalachian Trail Introduce

Welcome to the Stan Murray Shelter, a resting point for hikers on the Appalachian National Scenic Trail, located in Roan Mountain, TN 37687. As part of the Campgrounds & RV Parks category, this shelter provides basic overnight accommodations for those traversing the trail.

The Stan Murray Shelter is a medium-sized shelter that can accommodate approximately six hikers. It is named after a former Appalachian Trail Conservancy (ATC) chairman. The area around the shelter offers space for a few tents, providing additional sleeping options for hikers.

Key features and considerations for hikers:

  • Shelter capacity: Approximately 6 people.
  • Tent space available near the shelter.
  • Water source: An unreliable spring located about 100 yards away, with a steep descent. Hiking poles are recommended.
  • No privy (toilet facilities).
  • No bear cables or bear boxes for food storage.

Customer reviews indicate that the shelter is considered "small but cozy," especially during inclement weather. However, hikers should be prepared for the lack of amenities, such as a privy and reliable water source. One reviewer noted a humorous, if slightly odd, detail about a fake outlet sticker on the wall.

The Stan Murray Shelter provides a rustic and basic overnight option for hikers on the Appalachian Trail. Hikers should come prepared with necessary supplies and be aware of the limited amenities. Plan accordingly and respect the natural environment.

The Stan Murray Shelter is a medium sized shelter on the Appalachian Trail that sleeps about 6, and is named for a former ATC chairman. A few tents can fit near the shelter. An unreliable spring is located about 100 yards from the shelter and it is pretty steep - bring your poles. No privy. No bear cables/box.
