Customer Reviews
Loved this campground. Beautiful and well kept. The bathrooms are clean and showers warm. The river is peaceful and fun to dip toes in. Such a relaxing trip this past July.
Lovely campground. Loop 5 was a great place for tent campers. It's fully tree-covered, closed canopy on loop 5. If it rains, stuff will not dry out quickly. Bathrooms were clean. Be prepared if you need to drive to the bathroom, there's no parking. From the back of the loop it's a bit of a haul and a hill if you're wanting to shower and not get sweaty going back to the camp site. Great walking distance to the rivers for walking in the river or letting the kids play.
We love this somewhat remote campground - 3500’ elevation means it’s generally 10-20 degrees cooler than non-mountain places anywhere. The Nantahala river, only 20-30’ wide here, is cold, clear and FUN! The times I’ve come for first come first served sites there have always been some good choices.
A national park, so not as great as a State park but it was a beautiful area. Bathrooms could be improved but they did the job. Was there in October and the bathrooms were freezing cold, no where to sit your stuff, I brought my camp chair with me so I could sit down to get dressed. The showers had plenty of hot water but you had to keep pushing the knob to keep the water on.
Stopped by on a thru-hike on the Appalachian Trail. Was so grateful for the hospitality and wonderful people. They treated me so well, even though I didn't stay. Facilities are great. Very beautiful place and some of the nicest, most informative people. Thank you for the Check Mix! I'd visit anytime. A+~ rating in my book. You're treated like they've known you for years. Very down to Earth people and so friendly. 😊
Four “old” friends (in terms of how long we’ve known each other!) have gathered for fun, food, hiking and campfires in Loop 5 of Standing Indian Campground for many years. We love the location—such a beautiful area to enjoy a respite from stressful city life! We have enjoyed many hikes on the Standing Indian Loop trail via the AT that start and end at Standing Indian Campground. The camp staff has always been friendly and helpful, but that attribute has never been so over-the-top on display for us until this past Sunday, 6/8/2025. Two of our party had already departed on what had been a very rainy morning. My friend Sue and I took a little longer packing up to leave, but once we were ready to roll out, we found that we had a big problem with the automatic locking brakes on our camper—one of the camper wheels was not turning. It was Sunday, after a big rainy morning, and here we are unable to leave. The office was closed, but Sue was able to contact an office staff member so that we could call for roadside assistance. Instead, the kind staff person who opened up the office for us said to wait about calling roadside assistance—that she has staff on site who could probably help us with our issue. We drove back to our site, and within 5 minutes, our three rescuers —Tim, Phyllis, and Tom “Bossman” J.— drove up in their carts ready to assist! It took putting all heads together to figure out what the problem was, but within 10 minutes, they had solved our problem, as well as found the tiny little screw that accidentally fell into the gravel, and were able to send us on our way back home! They were all so kind and humorous, and we left Standing Indian with big smiles on our faces with the crisis averted. Just another warm and fuzzy memory that Sue and I will hold of this special place, and of course we are looking forward to returning to Standing Indian Campground soon!!! Thanks again to everyone who helped us! North Carolina is lucky to have you as employees! 😃 Sue & Betsy
